Slimes are a hostile mob that can spawn at any light level and attack you. They can't really sneak up and surprise you (you can always hear them) but knowing where to find them is useful. They can see you through solid blocks and will still come after you (they search for you within 16 spherical blocks).

Steps

  1. Know what to look for. In case you haven't already bumped into a slime, it's a fairly obvious mob beast. They look like animated blobs of green jelly. Slimes "hop" or bounce about.
  2. If you're a new player, encountering a slime is likely to be very rare. This is because they only occur in certain chunks and those chunks are fairly rare and are deep underground, after you've been playing for a while.
    • Slimes spawn only one tenth as often as other hostile mobs. This can make them hard to find. They're probably most easiest to find when a swamp biome is near (see below).
  3. Find slimes. Whether you're looking for slimes purposefully to grab yourself some slimeballs or you're just looking out for slimes, here's where they might be as you move around the game:
    • Slimes are found deep underground in the lowest 40 layers of certain chunks.
    • Slime can also be found in swamp biomes when it's nighttime (dark). This is for those who have the Pretty Scary Update of Minecraft. They spawn more with a full moon and not at all with a new moon.
    • Slimes can be found below level 40 in the Xbox version as well, since TU8.
    • If you have a superflat/flatland world with a generation level below level 40, you will encounter slimes everywhere (superflat is pretty scary on survival mode as they'll go after you and you can't defend yourself with a sword).

Fighting a slime[1]

  1. Approach the slime and perform several criticals. Be careful when killing the large slimes, as they will split. Once you've killed the slime, back up a bit. All but the smallest of slimes will split into smaller slimes.
    • When encountering a small slime, one hit from a sword will kill it. The little ones do no damage. Luckily for you, these will still drop slimeballs.
    • For a medium slime, it will split into small slimes. Kill the smaller ones. Medium slimes cause mild damage.
    • For a large slime, it will split into a medium slime. Kill as for medium slime. Large slimes cause moderate damage.
  2. Collect the drop (slimeballs) and experience.

Tips

  • It is possible to make a slime spawning room on discovery of a slime spawning chunk. This can still require a long wait before you get more slimes.
  • Slimes were very hard to find before update 1.4. In response to this, various slime finding tools were created. These can be found by searching online. A list can be found here: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Slimes#Slime_Finding_Tools.
  • Slimes are the only hostile mob that can spawn in the light, which is one reason why they are found in abundance on super-flat/flatland worlds.
  • Slimes are fairly easy to kill (as long as you're not in the super-flat world). Big slimes might be fatal if you're not careful but you should be able to deal with most slimes without trouble.

Warnings

  • When killed, bigger slimes split into lots more slimes, only smaller. You can kill the small ones and you'll get slimeballs rather than more splitting. And the smallest slimes can't hurt you; hit them once and they're dead.
  • Slimes can see you through solid blocks. The solid block will not deter them from coming after you.
