Want a new variety to listen to? Have a lot of friends or see people online listening to K-pop all the time? What's so good about it? What gets you hooked?

Steps

  1. Get past the language barrier, and be accepting. A lot of people who do not know Korean watch K-Pop online (like YouTube), but they look up English subtitles. It is normal for male idols to wear make up, but it doesn't mean they are automatically gay. Once you get past this, time to realize how much effort is put in the song, how catchy it is, and what it really means.
  2. Try to understand the meaning. Some songs, as upbeat as The Chaser by Infinite, or any other songs you may listen to, you'll be surprised how sweet the lyrics may be. Most Korean songs are love, and others can be other topics.
  3. Notice the choreography in almost all the movies. The choreography isn't easy. They practice the dance until it's perfect and in sync. They dance all the time (which is why most of them are in shape). They train for years to do this kind of choreography. Good examples to watch how talented they are are: Everybody by SHINee, Catch Me by TVXQ!, First Love by After School, Sorry Sorry dance version and Bonamana by Super Junior, Dope by BTS , Fly by Got7, and Growl by Exo.
  4. Appreciate that they train for years and they explain and show how hard they actually work. They can sing and dance while live, they seldom do lip sync. Listen to their strong vocals. Some are really good singers like Jung Daehyun of BAP, Lee Taeil of Block B, Jonghyun of SHINee, Taeyeon of Girl's Generation, Youngjae of Got7, Jungkook of BTS, Kyuhyun of super junior.
  5. Watch them through variety shows, such as Strong Heart, Star King, Hello Baby, Star Golden Bell, Sesame Player, MTV, Weekly Idol you'll fall for personalities of some idols.
  6. Don't care what others think if you like K-pop. There's different varieties. Ballads, electro, rock, dance, pop, and more.... Just look at the comments on some music videos, they will share what you think most times.

Tips

  • You can also choose a bias (a bias is a favorite member of a K-Pop group, or a favorite K-Pop idol).
  • Try to learn some of their dances if you like one!
  • Guys can listen to k-pop as well! It's not a girls only thing!
  • Avoid making fan wars like saying ___ is better than ____ publicly in a harsh way once you're into Kpop.
  • There are many groups by different companies. It's fine if you don't find one group as interesting as many of your friends think!
  • Don't think of idols as saints. Idols are human just like us, and humans aren't perfect. Sometimes international fans try to explain away an idol's negative behavior when it is obviously very culturally wrong in Korea.
  • Before judging harshly or becoming anti of something just because there's a scandal about them, learn the facts. It's more likely someone else has gotten it wrong.

Warnings

  • Be aware of the differences in culture. For example, Koreans are typically very touchy and affectionate. They call this 'Skinship.' Sometimes international fans get confused and think two idols are dating when they're just interacting as friends.
  • Don't become so attached to a k-pop star that you become a saesaeng fan!!! Other fans and your bias him/herself won't like it at all!!!
