By turning on the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, you can tether it to your iPad by sharing its cellular data connection to your iPad. If your iPad is Wi-Fi only, you can use this feature to access the web on your iPad when you’re away from your home Wi-Fi connection.

Steps

  1. Open the Settings app. On your iPhone’s Home screen, tap the Settings icon to open the settings app.
  2. Tap the Personal Hotspot option. If you do not see this option, your carrier may not allow personal hotspots on your wireless plan.
    • You can also check the Cellular section for the Personal Hotspot tool.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi Password.
  4. Type a password for your hotspot into the Password field. Now tap the Done button.
  5. Tap the Personal Hotspot toggle to set it to On.
  6. Tap the Settings icon on your iPad’s Home screen.
  7. Tap Wi-Fi from the left hand pane. The name of your iPhone should appear on the list of networks. Tap on its name.
  8. Enter the password you set on your iPhone into the field that appears. Then tap the Join button.

Tips

  • To use less data, set your iPad’s email to check for new messages less frequently.
  • Make sure that your iPhone has a strong connection to an Edge or 3G network in order to be able to receive the best access to the internet on your iPad.

Warnings

  • Setting a password for your Personal Hotspot is important in order to prevent others nearby from accessing your connection.
  • Using Personal Hotspot will increase the amount of data you use, so use it sparingly in order to avoid going over your plan’s monthly allowance
  • Some carriers may charge for the ability to create a hotspot. Check your carrier's policy on hotspots before proceeding.
  • If you use too much of your data than your monthly data plan, you will have to pay. So make sure you use your Personal Hotspot when needed.
  • Make sure you do not tell people your Hotspot's password! If you do it may result to someone using your WiFi when you don't know. This results to too much data being used at the end if the month.

Things You’ll Need

  • An iPhone running iOS 5 or later
  • A mobile contract with data plan, compatible with Personal Hotspot
  • A 3G or Edge data connection on your iPhone
