Transfer Photos from iPhone to Mac

This wikiHow teaches you how to access photos that you took with or stored on your iPhone on your Mac computer.

Steps

Using the Mac Photos App

  1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac. Use the USB cable that came with the device.
  2. Open the Photos app on your Mac. It's an app containing an icon that looks like a multicolored flower.
    • The app may open automatically when you connect your iPhone.
    • Your iPhone's icon should appear in the upper-left corner of the app's window.
  3. Click on Import. It's a tab at the top of the window. Your iPhone's photos and videos will be displayed in the window beneath the tabs.
  4. Select the photos you'd like to transfer. Do so by clicking on images in the window.
  5. Click on Import (#) Selected. It's in the upper-right corner of the window.
    • If you'd like to transfer all the photos on your iPhone that aren't already on your Mac, click on Import All New Items.
  6. Click on Albums. It's at the top of the window. The photos you just transferred will be in the "Last Import" album under this tab.

Using iCloud Photo Library

  1. Open your iPhone's Settings. It's a gray app that contains gears (⚙️) and is typically located on your home screen.
  2. Tap your Apple ID. It's the top section in the Settings menu that contains your name and image if you've added one.
    • If you are not signed in, tap Sign in to iPhone, enter your Apple ID and password, then tap Sign In.
    • If you are running an older version of iOS, you may not need to do this step.
  3. Tap iCloud. It's in the second section of the menu.
  4. Tap Photos. It's near the top of the "APPS USING ICLOUD" section.
  5. Slide "iCloud Photo Library" to the "On" position. It will turn green. Photos you take on your iPhone, as well as existing photos in your Camera Roll, will now be saved to iCloud.
    • If you'd like to save storage space on your iPhone, tap Optimize iPhone Storage to store smaller versions of photos on your device.
  6. Slide "Upload to My Photo Stream" to the "On" position. Any new photos you take with your iPhone will now sync to all that devices on which you've signed in with your Apple ID when they're connected to Wi-Fi.
  7. Click on the Apple menu on your Mac. It's the black apple icon on the Menu Bar in the upper-left corner of the screen.
  8. Click on System Preferences. It's near the top of the drop-down menu.
  9. Click on iCloud. It's on the left side of the System Preferences window.
    • If you haven't signed with your Apple ID, click on Sign in to iCloud and follow the on-screen prompts to sign in.
  10. Check the "Photos" box. It's near the top of the right pane.
  11. Click on Options…. It's to the right of Photos.
  12. Check the "iCloud Photo Library" box. It's at the top of the menu.
  13. Check the "My Photo Stream" box. It's the next menu option.
  14. Click on Done. It's in the lower-right corner of the dialog box.
  15. Open the Photos app on your Mac. It's the app with a multi-colored flower icon.
  16. Click on Albums. It's at the top of the window.
  17. Click All Photos. It's one of the albums on the screen, likely in the upper-left corner. After your iPhone and Mac have synced with iCloud, the photos from your iPhone will appear in this folder.

Using AirDrop

  1. Click on Finder on your Mac. It's a blue and light blue icon that contains a smiley face and is usually located in your Dock. This opens a Finder window on your desktop.
    • Your Mac and iPhone must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network or Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices.
  2. Click on AirDrop. It's under "Favorites" in the toolbar on the left side of the finder Window.
  3. Click on "Allow me to be discovered by". It's at the bottom of the Finder window. A drop-down menu will open.
  4. Click on Everyone.
  5. Open the Photos app on your iPhone. It's a white app with a multi-colored flower icon.
  6. Tap Albums. It's at the bottom of the screen.
  7. Tap All Photos. It's one of the albums on the screen, likely in the upper-left corner.
  8. Select a photo. Do so by tapping the photo you want to share.
  9. Tap the "Share" button. It's a rectangle that contains an upward-pointing arrow in the lower-left corner of the screen.
  10. Select additional photos (optional). Scroll left or right through the photos at the top of screen and tap the open circle in the lower-right corner of an image to select it.
    • Some users have reported issues when trying to use AirDrop to transfer multiple photos.[1]
  11. Tap the name of your Mac. It will appear between the images at the top of the screen and the other sharing options at the bottom of the screen.
    • If you don't see the Mac, ensure that the device is close enough (within a few feet) and that AirDrop is enabled.
    • If prompted to turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, do so.
  12. Click on Save. This saves the picture to Photos on your Mac.
    • Click on Open and Save to see the picture(s) you saved to your Mac.
