Are you sick of wearing what everyone else does? Perhaps you have worn the same style for many years and are opting for a change. There are many reason to change your look to a something that conforms to your style. The trick is to find the perfect balance between standing out and fitting in.

Steps

  1. Figure out what your personality is. Consider the following: your preferences (are you girly and chic, glamorous and sophisticated, boyish and sporty?), your lifestyle (are you down-to-earth or more of a city girl?), and who you want to be. Perhaps you are more elegant, or don't fit into the classic stereotypes. No matter what, everyone can find their personality if you just observe what kind of choices you make day to day.
  2. Figure out what clothes you feel comfortable in. Don't like dresses? Maybe you love your Levi's... find clothes you feel comfortable in and items that reflect your true personality.
  3. Ask friends with similar styles or style that you admire to reflect on some of your fashion choices. Find a close friend who you know will be honest.
  4. Remember dress codes! Going to work in cut-off shorts and tank top isn't going to work. And a ball gown isn't going to fly at school.
  5. Look through magazines or watch TV shows for inspiration. Look at shoes, shirts and makes notes of ones you really like.
  6. Think of what your favorite looks are. Try to fuse some together so you can have your very own style. If you like fishnets, try wearing them with your fave skirt. Mix and match!
  7. Save a sum of money and buy a lot of new clothes and shoes. Look for things on sale and for deals. This way you can extend your wardrobe even more. If you don't have a lot of money, try buying small things to slowly change your style. Also, flea markets, salvation army stores and thrift stores can actually have some really cool clothes. Also, don't forget cheap stores like Target and Carrefour.
  8. Find things that are your size. Look at people around you with the same sort of body type and look at their ideas.
  9. Think outside the box -- it all depends what you're going for. Don't just do punk, wear gym shorts as well. Mix and find your perfect style. Just do what you want.
  10. For perfect style try a fashion consultant.

Tips

  • Remember style does not mean just wearing something, you have to have the confidence to pull it off, example if you want to wear a mini skirt but don't feel confident enough wear it with tights or stockings for a more daring and sexier look and try out new styles of shoes like for example Toms and if you don't want slip ons try a different type like Vans or Converse or even shoes that are easy to put on if you are in a rush.
  • If you feel your clothes are out of "fashion", try adding bows/ribbons to an old tank top or putting rips in some old jeans. Just because it's old, it doesn't mean you can't wear it any more.
  • Some great companies for a more tame look are LandsEnd, American Eagle, Aeropostale or Target.

Warnings

  • Try to only get a lot of new clothes when your old ones are getting thin and, well, old.
