There are endless varieties of homemade cereal you can make. Two of the easiest types to prepare are granola and muesli. Both are a blend of ingredients like rolled oats, nuts, dried fruit and other tasty morsels. Once you try your own custom breakfast creation, you may never buy boxed cereal again!

Ingredients

Granola Ingredients

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • 1 cup chopped or slivered almonds
  • 1 cup cashews or walnuts
  • ¾ cup shredded coconut
  • ¼ cup maple syrup or honey
  • ¼ cup dark brown sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil (not olive oil)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup raisins or other dried fruit (cherries, cranberries, etc.)

Muesli Ingredients

  • 4 ½ cups rolled oats
  • ½ cup toasted wheat germ
  • ½ cup wheat bran
  • ½ cup oat bran
  • 1 cup raisins
  • ½ cup chopped nuts (almonds, walnuts or cashews)
  • ¼ cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup raw, unsalted sunflower seeds

Steps

Making Granola

Granola is a baked cereal that takes a little longer to make than muesli, but will result in a crunchy, versatile treat that you can eat with milk or sprinkle on yogurt or ice cream.

  1. Preheat your oven to 250 °F (120 °C).
  2. Mix the nuts, oats, coconut, and brown sugar in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to ensure that there are no clumps of the same ingredient.
  3. In a different bowl, mix the maple syrup (or honey), oil, and salt.
  4. Pour the syrup mixture into the oats mixture. Combine well.
  5. Spread the mixture into two shallow pans. Place in the preheated oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
  6. Stir the mixture every 15 minutes. To help it brown evenly.
  7. Take the granola out of the oven. Pour it into a large bowl and allow it to cool. Add raisins (or your dried fruit of choice) and combine until the fruit is evenly mixed into the granola.
  8. Place in an airtight container. It should keep for 2-3 weeks.

Making Muesli

Muesli is a chewy variety of cereal that tastes best with cold milk or mixed into yogurt.

  1. Mix the oats, wheat germ, wheat bran, oat bran, raisins (or dried fruit), nuts, sugar and seeds in a large bowl.
  2. Combine all the ingredients and store in an airtight container. It will keep for 4-6 weeks in an airtight container.
  3. Finished.

Tips

  • Both cereals go well with fresh, seasonal fruit on top.
  • Roast the nuts lightly before mixing into the muesli for a rich, nutty flavor.
  • Substitute coconut oil in the granola and add dried pineapple or banana for a tropical taste.
  • Mix muesli with a small carton of yogurt and leave overnight for a cool, summer breakfast treat.
  • You can find the ingredients for both recipes in the bulk section of many grocery stores and markets.

Warnings

  • Don't over bake the granola - you want an even, golden brown color.
