Trying to learn new words? What better way, than to learn them through a game. Balderdash is your answer. This article will assist you in getting the fine points out to explain this game to you.

Steps

  1. Purchase a brand new copy of the game Balderdash from the store and bring it to your game-area at home or location.
  2. Rip open the plastic seal that encloses the Balderdash game package.
  3. Pull the top of the box open.
  4. Remove the game board from it's plastic package, the package containing the plastic moving pieces and miscellaneous pieces and a die, as well as the game cards currently being held inside the other box inside the game package. These are the bare minimum things you'll need to prepare.
  5. Assemble a small group of people. The more the better!
    • Although the game can be played with two people, its easy to tell what the real answer is at the very end of each players turn.
    • 4 or 5 people are an absolute minimum number to assure some validity.
  6. Allow each player to roll the die. Rolling the die will allow the game to obtain the first player to set foot. Highest number becomes the first player to read the questions to the remaining players (In Balderdash, this player is called the dasher.
  7. Place the plastic men on the Start space on the board.
  8. Allow the dasher to roll the die. Rolling the die will help determine which category will be used for the given play.
  9. Rolling a 6 can be given at dasher's choice of category.
  10. Allow the dasher to read off the category name and topic, along with it's "What is this supposed to be used for?" question or "What is this definition?" or "who is this person?" or "what does this (initial) stand for)? or "What is this movie about?" or "What is this law?" question.
  11. Hand each player a page to the Answer sheet pad/booklet.
  12. Allow them time to write down the question in the Question section, and their proposed bluffing answer in the Answer section.
  13. Ask the players to place the name of the dasher someplace on the sheet, along with their initials (or name) in the cards too (designating which one is which)
  14. Have them bring up the answers to the dash. Make sure they realize that when read, they are not to mention in any way that the answer is there own (however subtle the motion may be).
  15. Allow the dasher the same chance to write down the question and the real answer.
    • Never allow the card to be seen by any of the players.
  16. Allow the player the chance to sit down again.
  17. Make sure the reader has the ability to peruse through the cards. Although not often when a bluff is the same as the answer, you can't allow this card to be read. Read the real answer instead and give the player 3 points. Don't allow this player to guess or vote again in this round.
  18. Include the real answer somewhere in the choices.
  19. Allow all players to vote for whichever card they think the item really means/is.
  20. Record all the votes on each card.
  21. Reveal the real answer.
  22. Tally up the scores.
  23. Allow all players who have scored in this round, the ability to move their game pieces the given number of spaces they acquired by amount of votes tallied during the previous round.
  24. Move around the table, choosing a new dasher from the player to the left of the last dasher.
  25. Repeat these steps until the player who crosses the "Finish" line is obtained. The player who crosses the finish line first, is the winner.

Tips

  • Try to understand the scoring system as described in the instruction booklet. 1 point is given for the player who scored a vote for their bluff, 2 points are given for the player who correctly guessed the real answer, and 3 points to either the dasher for when no one guessed the real answer or are given to the player that has a bluff similar to the real answer.
  • If playing with the game board, the company supplies you with 6 little men. Keep the number of players low, in this situation. If not playing with game board, disregard and bring it as high as you want.
  • If you really don't want to play with the game board (but still want to learn some new unknown knowledge), you may omit this portion of the game. Try to see if you can bluff any people with the choices you obtain. Sometimes, this is nice when you really feel like learning new words or people or etc.
  • According to the Balderdash Instruction booklet, it states in the footnote, that all answers in Balderdash cards, "are very real and have been recognized by at least 2 legitimate reference sources".
  • Some topics can be more quickly written than others. Allow these longer choices the ability to have extra time.
  • If a player lands on a "Double Bluff" space on the game board, the next vote total-score, can be doubled and thereby that player can then run this doubled-bluff play-score on the next round for next word.
