This article will help you to learn how to draw dogs in several different styles. Read on to learn how to draw cartoon dogs as well as more realistic-looking dogs.

Steps

A Cartoon Dog

  1. Draw a circle.
  2. Overlap it with a horizontal oval at its bottom.
  3. Create a couple of double-lined ovals for the eyes.
  4. Follow it with another small oval for the nose.
  5. Just beneath it draw curved lines for the mouth.
  6. Draw one of its ears with curved lines as shown below.
  7. Similarly draw another ear.
  8. Overlap the oval at the bottom with another rectangle.
  9. Create and overlap the rectangle with a box with curved sides.
  10. Attach another overlapping irregular box below for the tummy.
  11. Overlap the bottom with another irregular box with curved sides for the lower back.
  12. Overlap a small oval at the bottom tip for the hind leg paw.
  13. Draw a vertical rectangle with curved sides with the upper side open for one of the forelegs.
  14. At the base of that rectangle draw overlapping oval for the foreleg paw.
  15. Draw a similar vertical rectangle for another foreleg.
  16. Overlap with another similar-sized oval for another paw.
  17. Add a small curved line for the tail.
  18. Add every detail to the drawing based on the guide lines.
  19. Erase all guides.
  20. Colour the doggy.

A Hound

  1. Draw a modest circle for the head of the dog.
  2. Join three straight lines joined to each other on the edge of the circle for the mouth of the dog.
  3. Add two triangles on the upper surface of the circle for the ears.
  4. Add two straight lines joined to the circle for the neck.
  5. Draw a big horizontal oval for the upper body joined to the neck.
  6. Overlap the big sized oval with a smaller oval at the bottom.
  7. Overlap another oval for the lower back.
  8. Join the biggest oval to the oval which forms the lower back with a straight line.
  9. Add straight lines joined at the bottom for the forelegs of the animal.
  10. Join the base of the forelegs with uneven rectangles for the paws. Do the same for the hind legs also.
  11. Draw a small curved line for the tail of the animal at the bottom of the lower back oval.
  12. Add a small-sized horizontal oval at the upper end of the foreleg for the leg bone and muscle area.
  13. On the basis of the rough guides draw every detail of the animal.
  14. Clean–up the drawing by erasing all guide lines.
  15. Color the dog.

An Alternative Cartoon Dog

  1. Draw two overlapping circles. The smaller circle is at the upper left part.
  2. Draw the details for the ears. Draw a curve to cut the top circle into two sectors.
  3. Draw the details for the dog’s face. Draw the eyes, nose, snout, and mouth. Make it look like a cartoon.
  4. Draw the body using straight and curve lines connected to the second circle.
  5. Draw details for the dog’s paws and tail.
  6. Trace with a pen and erase unnecessary lines. Add details for the body and teeth.
  7. Color to your liking!

A Traditional Dog

  1. Draw two circles of different sizes and an oval for the framework.
  2. Draw the details for the dog’s legs using straight lines. Draw using simple shapes as trapezoids, rectangles, and polygons.
  3. Draw the dog’s body using curved lines connecting the circles and oval.
  4. Draw details of the dog’s head using curve lines. Refine the drawing to make distinct the dog’s eyes, ears, snout, nose, and mouth.
  5. Trace with a pen and erase unnecessary lines.
  6. Color according to your liking!

A Realistic Dog

  1. Draw two ovals. They should be side by side. Make one slightly larger than the other. Make sure they're not too far apart. That is key in this drawing.
  2. Make an outline. Draw a line that goes down and goes on top of the ovals you've made. Then draw one under it doing the same. On the bottom one, bend in a little in between ovals. Then draw the beginnings of legs, like drawn in the picture. Make the bottom and top lines go up, then draw a circle for the beginning of a head. Draw a nose by drawing an oval that's partially in the head.
  3. Draw lines outlining the head. Do the same to the head as you did to the body. After this, erase the circles in the body and head. Add ears to the head that are either long and floppy, or short and up. Then add either a short or long tail. At this point, it's good to have a selected breed in mind, as this it where all the details are.
  4. Erase all inner circles. Carefully erase all of your circles and ovals. Then add fur by drawing ruffles on the outlines. You can also smudge the pencil lead lightly to create shadows or darker spots on the dog.Your dog should be very realistic!
  5. Finished.
