This article will explain how to maintain healthy and clean dreadlocks at home, without spending lots of money and time.

Steps

  1. Don't use anything to make them. Don't use wax or any other product, because it will stay there. It is almost impossible to clean bees wax from the hair.
  2. To make dreads without any product, you should pick a lock of hair and knot it. To knot it you twist it, separate in two, pull the two parts away, and again, twist, split in two, pull. After this it will look like a mess, so then you pick a 0,75mm or 1,00mm crochet needle, insert and pull the needle. That will make them tighter.
  3. At the beginning the dreads will be thinner, so make them thinner than the final size you want.
  4. At the beginning is better not to wash them a lot, and let them knot for like 4 days. You can put rubber bands on the roots, to avoid loose hairs from your scalp but make sure to remove them after you fixed the dread.
  5. You will find on the web hundreds of products for dreads, knotting products, shampoos, wax... Don't buy anything!!! The products that you can buy in the internet are find-able also next to your home, and generally they leave residues in your head, and the secret for knotty dreads is clean hair!!
  6. Coconut Oil: This is a very cheap, easy to find product that will make your dreads cleaner. Coconut oil looks like butter, you put a little in your hands, rub it till it's liquid and put it all over your scalp and dreads. Leave it for at least one night.
  7. To wash the coconut oil, and clean your scalp the best is to use the simplest and old fashioned soap. It has to be 100% natural, like the ones that our grandparents used. Normal shampoos and all the products I mentioned before (the ones that are specially for dreads), will leave residues that will stay inside your dreads for ever, making them look dirty or even smelly.
  8. Be sure to clean all your scalp and dreads, and wash it thoroughly.
  9. Drying the dreads is very IMPORTANT! squeeze as much water as you can, and dry them in the sun, or with a hairdryer, mildew can grow inside them if you leave them wet for too long, the older the dreads, the tighter they are, the more difficult to dry them. So, be sure to dry them completely after washing.
  10. You will notice that clean dreads knot easily. There are many methods to maintain dreads, like needling, twisting, backcombing, clockwise rubbing method and palm rolling, but we will leave that for another article.
  11. Enjoy your clean dreads!
