Most Picnik users know that you can change people's hair color using Picnik, but there are a few ways to alter hair color on Picnik for free.

Steps

Teeth Whiten Method

  1. Open Picnik and upload the photo you want to edit.
  2. To make white hair, click the "Create" tab and then click the "Touch Up" button. Scroll down until you see the "Teeth Whiten" effect. This will produce white or grey hair.
  3. Choose a manageable brush size, then and start clicking and dragging the tool over the hair in your picture.

Sepia Method

  1. To make sepia-toned hair, click the "Create" tab and scroll down until you see the "Sepia" effect. Sepia is good for reds, blonds, greys and some browns.
  2. Click the little paintbrush button next to the fade bar. You will see a little box with a header that says "Effect Painting." Click the "Reverse Effect" checkbox.
  3. Adjust the brush size and click and drag the tool over the hair in your picture.

Tint Method

  1. To achieve a range of hair colors, click the "Create" tab and scroll down until you see the "Tint" effect.
  2. You will also see a little box with a header that says "Effect Painting." Click the "Reverse Effect" checkbox.
  3. Adjust the brush size and click and drag the tool over the hair in your picture.

Adding Highlights

  1. Once you've used one of the above methods to change the hair color, you can also add highlights on top of the base color.
  2. First, click "Apply" to save the effect.
  3. Then, simply use another of the above methods to paint small streaks and highlights over the hair.

Tips

  • Click "Apply" when you are happy with an effect. If you don't, the effect won't save.
  • You can move around the little dialogue box with the "Reverse Effect" check box if it's getting in your way. Just click and drag the colored bar at the top that says "Effect Painting."
  • The lighter the hair color in the picture, the more drastically you will be able to alter it.
  • To make the hair color look more "natural," or to get as close as you possibly can to black hair, use the Tint Method; then, above the fade far on the left, click the "Advanced Methods" drop menu that reads "Normal" and change it to "Multiply."
  • If you accidentally brush over part of the original photo you don't want to change, click the "Original" button next to the "Effect" button. Then size a paintbrush to remove the error.
  • Don't forget the fade bar! Use this to change the saturation of the new hair color.

Warnings

  • These methods cannot be used to create completely black hair.
  • Don't inform admins on the Picnik website that this is possible, or they might disable this feature.
