Remotely Shut Down, Log Off, and Restart Networked Computers

Would you like to learn how to shutdown, restart, or logoff computers that you aren't currently using? With a bit of knowledge, you'll be able to shut off computers around your house without moving, and restart computers just for the heck of it.

Steps

  1. Click on "Start" on your computer's task bar.
  2. Click "Run" type in cmd and click ok.
  3. In the pop-up box, type "shutdown.exe -i" exactly as stated here.
  4. Another box appears which will allow you to choose what action you would like to perform on which computer(s) and you can even type in a comment to be sent to the computer(s) before the action is performed.
  5. To select a computer, type in the computers IP address in the appropriate box.
  6. Begin the process by clicking the OK button on the bottom of the window.

Tips

  • The computer name can be found by right-clicking on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, clicking properties, and then clicking the appropriate tab on the top. If your computer does not have this feature, you can go to "Start", "All Programs", "Accessories", "System Tools", and finally "System Information".

Warnings

  • It is not recommended that this method is used at schools or another protected place where you will have to get past an administrator block.
  • Be sure that there are no running programs on the affected computers because data may be lost.
  • There is a possibility that you may accidentally disable the wrong computer, so be absolutely certain that the computer name is correct.
