This article is an introduction to installing Java games on some Motorola mobile phones. This method has only been tested on a Motorola e770v, but sources have said it works on other Motorola mobiles. You will need a mobile with a USB connection, and a computer with a USB port.

Steps

  1. Verify that your Motorola mobile has the Java micro edition installed. You can usually find this under "Main Menu" -> "Settings" -> "Java Settings" -> "Java System". If you cannot find it here, and you know you have Java, check around because it may be elsewhere. If you have followed the menus this far, you should see something that resembles the output shown in the "Java System Output Example" section below these steps.
  2. Boot your computer.
  3. Attach a USB cable between your phone and your PC. If you don't have one, you can either buy one or borrow one from a friend. These cables are typically known as having one USB connector that attaches to the computer, and one mini USB connector that attaches to the phone.
  4. Navigate to your phone in Windows Explorer.
  5. Click on the "Tools" menu, select "Folder Options," and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also make sure that "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" is unchecked. This will ensure we see the necessary files and folders.
  6. Open the KJava folder.
  7. Search the Internet to find midlets (Java micro games and apps). For example, Google for "free midlets" or "free .jar files." Some sites will offer multiple files, normally .jar or .jad files. Download a .jar file. Make sure you validate your downloads with anti-virus and anti-malware software.
  8. Drag and drop the .jar file into the KJava directory.
  9. Right click on the phone's listing and select "Eject."
  10. Wait a few seconds, then unplug the USB cable.
  11. Navigate to your phone's Games or Applications and select "Install New."
  12. Follow the installation process and hope for the best. Some applications you try may not work well, if at all.
  13. Uninstall all non-working applications and games, then delete the installer from the KJava folder.

Tips

  1. A good site to start with is: jfdoue.free.fr, and the Asteroids game.
  2. This will not work with all phones, mobile devices, or wireless providers who've altered a phone's default operating system. Please add yours to the list below if it works. List of handsets in which this is known to work:

    • Motorola E770v
    • Motorola RAZR V3i
    • Motorola RAZR V3T
    • Motorola RAZR Z3
    • Motorola V3i
    • Motorola V3x
  3. Phones and mobile devices that are known not to work with this:

    • Motorola RAZR V3
    • Motorola RAZR V3m
    • Motorola RAZR V6m
  4. Cellular service providers who disable the ability to add your own software:

    • US Cellular

Warnings

  1. If an application asks to "Use Data Network" or similar request, decline it unless you have an unlimited data network plan or don't mind paying for internet access. This is also a security risk, so answer this wisely.
