Wireless PlayStation 3 controllers can enhance your gaming experience, but must be charged regularly for use. You can charge your PS3 controller at any time by plugging it into your PS3 console via USB cable.

Steps

Charging Your PS3 Controller

  1. Power on your PS3 console, and wait for the indicator light to turn solid green.
  2. Connect your PS3 controller to the console using the USB cable that was supplied with your controller. The red lights at the top of the controller will flash slowly to indicate the controller is charging.
  3. Wait for the red lights at the top of the controller to stop flashing. Your wireless PS3 controller will now be fully charged.

Troubleshooting Your PS3 Controller

  1. Plug your controller into a different USB port on your Playstation 3 console. If your controller isn’t charging, this will help determine whether the USB port on your console is faulty, or causing problems.
  2. Use another USB cord if none of the USB ports are effective at charging your controller. In some cases, the problem may lie with a faulty or defective USB cord.[1]
  3. Reset your PS3 controller if the controller continues not to charge. This will return the controller to its original default settings, and may correct any charging problems.
    • Use a paperclip to press the small reset button located at the bottom of your controller near the L2 button.
    • Connect the controller to your PS3 console via the USB cable and press the PS button.
  4. Finished.

Tips

  • You can continue to play games and use the PS3 controller while it charges, but you will need to keep the controller plugged into the console via the USB cable to maintain a charge until the controller is fully charged.
  • To check the current battery level on your PS3 controller, press and hold down the PlayStation logo button on the controller for at least two seconds. The current battery charge level will display briefly on your television or computer screen.

Warnings

  • Keep in mind that the PS3 controller will only charge if the PS3 console is powered on. If the controller is plugged into the console, but the console is powered off, your controller will not charge.
