Change a Video Format to Play It on Windows Without Downloading

Nearly all the video formats, even the .flv format used by YouTube, can be changed into a variety of alternative video formats, including .wmv (windows movie format). Below are the simple steps detailing video format conversion.

Steps

  1. Become familiar with the video file extensions: avi, 3gp, swf, mpeg, mov and more can be converted into .wmv files (windows video format).
  2. Research the video-video converters.
  3. Realize that none of the listed converters can convert flv format directly. These applications lack the necessary codecs to convert the .flv format (used by YouTube) into other video formats. Still, there is a way to convert the .flv files into the video format of your choice.
  4. Install Mozilla Firefox, and "DownloadHelper" from the add-ons menu. (The file size is less than 50kb.)
  5. Start the "DownloadHelper". Right click on any free space. The dialogue box will appear and "DownloadHelper" will be among the listed entries. Click on "DownloadHelper".
  6. Restart Mozilla Firefox.
  7. Click on preferences and select the "Conversion" tab.
  8. Install the converter. Click on "Install/Update converter" free. Wait for the install to complete, then restart the browser.
  9. Check to make sure the install completed correctly. Go to conversion tab again and check it, You should see "The converter application has been found on your system".
  10. Save your setting and enable conversion. Click "OK" at the bottom of the screen to finalize.
  11. Right click on the Firefox screen, click "DownloadHelper", then click "Convert videos".
  12. Select any video file, even .flv videos.
  13. Select .flv video and then click "open" at the bottom of the box.
  14. Select the "convert to" format. A new box will appear with available output video file formats listed. The list will include .wmv, .mpeg ipod, .mp3, and others. Select .wmv, and click on the OK button at the bottom of the box.
  15. Conversation will start.
  16. Note the specific output file storage location. The converted file will be saved at the same location where the original video is stored.
