The file, hiberfil.sys, is a copy of the computer's RAM when the computer goes into hibernation. It's size corresponds to the amount of RAM on your computer, anywhere from 512 MB to multiple GB. The easiest way to delete it is to turn off the hibernation feature. The following procedure applies to Microsoft Windows XP only.

Steps

  1. Open Power Options from the Windows Control Panel.
  2. Go to the Hibernate tab.
  3. Uncheck the Enable hibernation box to turn the hibernation feature off.
  4. Click OK or Apply to accept your changes.
  5. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
  6. Right-click Command Prompt
  7. Select Run as administrator
  8. Grant permission to change system settings
  9. In this privileged command prompt window, enter this exactly, without quotes: "powercfg -h off"
  10. Restart your computer.
  11. Check the C:\ directory to see if hiberfil.sys was automatically deleted.

Tips

  • Check the Enable hibernation box to turn hibernation back on.
  • If the above does not work for you, go to command prompt and enter "powercfg /h off". That works especially well on Acer notebooks.
  • This file can be the cause of errors. Turn off hibernation and remove the file if you see this error: "The system restoration image is corrupt. Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."
