Apple recently released the latest version of Mac OS X called OS X Lion through the Mac App Store as a downloadable app. When new versions of any operating system are released, many users often wait to upgrade in order to let others find any flaws, bugs, or vulnerabilities. However, there are easy ways of testing a new operating system without compromising your current installation of OS X. This article will walk you through the process of installing OS X Lion on an external hard drive.

Steps

  1. Download Mac OS X Lion from the Mac App Store.
  2. Connect the external hard drive you want to install OS X Lion on to your Mac.
  3. Navigate to Applications>Utilities> and double-click Disk Utility.
  4. Select the hard drive you connected from the pane on the left within Disk Utility. Note: Be careful, this process will erase everything on your external drive before installing Lion.
  5. Click the “Partition” tab followed by “1 partition” from the drop down menu.
  6. Click the “Options” button and Select “GUID Partition Table” followed by “OK”.
  7. Click “Apply” when you are done to create your new formatted partition on your drive.
  8. Double-click the OS X Lion Installer app you downloaded to launch it.
  9. Click “Continue” on the welcome screen to start the installation process.
  10. Click “Agree” followed by the blue “Agree” button to agree to the terms of software license agreement.
  11. Click the “Show All Disks…” button.
  12. Click the partition you created from the list of available disks followed by the “Install”.
  13. Enter your administrator password when prompted and click “OK” to begin the installation process. Your computer will automatically restart and begin the installation process. After the installation process is finished, you will be prompted to restart your Mac again.
