It's a week before your birthday. You're sitting in your room, pulling your hair out trying to figure out what goodies your parents got you. Well, here's basically how to figure it out.

Steps

  1. Make a list of what you want about a month before your birthday. This won't help you figure out where to find your present, but it will be better. Remember to point out to your parents what you want the most.
  2. Pick one thing on the list. Try to figure out where you would hide it if you were getting it for someone.
  3. Try to look for your presents secretly when you're alone or when you know you won't be caught.
  4. Look in a closet or other space that is always locked. If your mom has a way to get in, you can too. Look for a key somewhere, or some means of opening it.
  5. Think outside the box. Look behind shelves, cabinets, drawers, under coats and blankets, and such places like that.
  6. Think to yourself, "Where would I hide it?" Minds think alike, especially if they're from the same gene-pool.
  7. Check her email. This is considered an invasion of personal space, but look for items from eBay, Amazon, Overstock, etc. The subject might be like "You've won on eBay" or "confirming your order." The messages should have the item names inside of them.
  8. Look in the trunk of the car that you don't use or if your parents say " No, I'll put it in the trunk for you". This is for particularly big, heavy presents.
  9. Be prepared for the right time to look around, such as when no one is around.
  10. Ask your parent/guardian where you could hide a present for someone, chances are she or he tells you the same place where they hide your presents too. However, they are likely to get suspicious if you ask them this when your birthday is nearby.
  11. Your parents might drop hints as if to tell you what they got. Like my parents told me that my uncle would be upset if he wasn't there, and they never get me anything so I figured it would be something expensive.
  12. If your parents take you to their workplace, look around there because they might be hiding it in their office.
  13. Try to look through receipts that are used and see if anything might possibly be for you.
  14. Your parents might not have bought it yet so look around.
  15. If you can't find any evidence, then they probably haven't bought anything yet.

Tips

  • If your parents try to keep you away from a certain place, search there first when they aren't around.
  • First look in the obvious places, then move on to more concealed hiding spots. Closets or drawers are popular places to hide gifts.
  • Look everywhere you can think of. Sometimes your parents might put the gifts in places you will never think of, like behind a painting or under a pile of clothes, but remember, don't look in places like an oven, or in a vent.
  • Common hiding places are under the bed obstructed from your view and in dressers as well as high shelves of closets.
  • A common place parents hide [particularly small to medium sized] is in boxes that you have no interest in, such as boxes marked "Cleaning Supplies" or "Halloween Decorations".
  • Look in places where kids don't usually go, for example wine coolers, medicine cabinets or even your sibling's bedroom.
  • If you have a storage room that your parents don't like you going in look there first. From experience that is where parents hide presents. Just make sure not to get caught because your parents might take away the present and/or stop hiding things there so when Christmas comes you will know where to find your presents.
  • Try to look in the old receipts, there you might find what they have bought for you.
  • If your house has an air conditioning unit in a closet, check under the the AC unit. This is a common hiding spot that many people wouldn't expect to conceal gifts in.
  • If your mum or dad have told you they are buying presents for you when they go shopping, try to follow them without them noticing once they get back from their shop. Make sure they don't see you though!
  • If you are an out-of-the-box thinker search the obvious places because your parents most likely hid it there because they KNEW you would look in the hard places.

Warnings

  • Be careful. Looking at another person's email is an invasion of personal space. Also, try not to get caught.
  • If you feel your sibling would tattle on you if they caught you, try to find a way to do it when they aren't around.
  • Resist temptation and try not to unwrap or fiddle with any found gift. Under no circumstances attempt to take it with you.

Things You'll Need

  • Presents to examine
  • A computer
  • Keys, if necessary
  • A pencil and paper for the list
  • A flashlight to look behind stuff
