Do you have a computer virus that can't be removed with antivirus software? Does your computer crash a lot of times? This article will show you how to format a Dell computer. At the time of writing, this will be Windows XP.

Steps

  1. Turn on your computer. If you have a laptop, we recommend that you plug the computer into a power outlet so you will not drain your battery.
  2. Press F12 for the boot menu immediately.
  3. Insert your OS disk. It may be Windows XP, Vista, or Windows 7, depending on your configuration of your operating system. Don't worry—if you lose your OS disk, you may buy another one from Dell.com.
  4. Select CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions, and insert different disks occasionally (it may be individually labeled such as Operating System, Applications, and Drivers).
  6. Now it is fixed.

Tips

  • This works for other brands, but you may need to follow different directions.

Warnings

  • Formatting will erase all your data, so backup before you do it.
