Sometimes commercial cleaning detergents can be harmful to the environment as well as irritating to sensitive skin. Store brands of glass cleaner usually contain harmful chemicals such as ammonia which can trigger the sinuses as well. Here are some easy and inexpensive ways to save money, the environment, and your skin by creating your own glass cleaner.

Steps

Vinegar and Dish Soap

  1. Mix one cup of vinegar and 1/2 tsp dish soap with one gallon warm water.
  2. Pour in a spray bottle and use as you would with any glass cleaner.

Citrus Peels

  1. Soak citrus peels of your choice in vinegar, a few weeks prior to making the cleaner.
  2. Strain the citrus mixture and pour in a bottle.
  3. Mix one cup of citrus scented vinegar with one cup of water in a spray bottle.

Club Soda

  1. Pour club soda in a spray bottle, and use as your regular glass cleaner.

Corn Starch

  1. Mix one cup vinegar, and 1/8 cup corn starch to one gallon of water.
  2. Mix well.

Rubbing Alcohol

  1. Mix 1/3 cup distilled white vinegar with 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol.

Rubbing Alcohol and Dish Soap

  1. Add 1/2 cup rubbing alcohol and two squirts of a dish soap that doesn't contain phosphorous to one gallon of warm water.

Tips

  • It's best to use distilled white vinegar only because flavoured vinegars such as apple cider will streak glass.
  • Try wiping off the cleaner with newspaper instead of paper towels. Newspaper absorbs dirt better than regular paper towels.

Warning

  • Avoid using vinegar mixtures on marble as it will etch the surface and cause damage.
