Mascara is a very important tool in applying eye makeup. Mascara often makes eyes look much deeper and more detailed, completing the look you may be striving for.

Steps

  1. Apply other makeup. This includes foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, etc. If you worry about getting mascara on your eyeliner, you can stick a business card behind your eyelashes to prevent smudging. Optionally, curl your eyelashes for extra length before you put mascara on.
  2. Open the mascara. Rub the end of the mascara applicator on the inside rim of the mascara tube to get excess off.
  3. Position yourself comfortably in front of a mirror. If you feel unsteady, try leaning your dominant elbow on a firm surface.
  4. With a steady hand, place the mascara wand at the root of your eyelashes. Gently pull the wand up to the end of your lashes, slightly jarring the wand back and forth to separate the lashes and prevent clumps. Repeat across your eyelashes, making sure to get every lash.
  5. Touch up any imperfections by holding the mascara wand vertically. Lightly run it along your upper and lower eyelashes to add slight color to them.
    • If your lashes stick together, try a lash comb. Place the comb at the lash roots, and gently pull up through the lashes. Do this before the mascara has had a chance to dry, otherwise the mascara will flake off into your eyes and down your cheek.
  6. Remove any mascara smudges with makeup remover. Place a cotton bud on the top of the smudge, and gently rotate in place until it comes off. Use your finger to blend your eyeshadow back in.
  7. Finished.

Tips

  • To get more product on the mascara wand, place it inside the tube and twirl it. Do not pump it in and out, as this will pump air into the tube and cause your mascara to dry out faster.
  • To apply a thin, but even coat (if you hate those clumps, this will probably work no matter what kind of mascara you have --this is how professional makeup artists apply it). Using one finger, gently lift the skin of your upper eyelid up, then with your other hand gently stroke the mascara wand through your lashes a few times, from the inner corner to the outer corner, going over the tips of your lashes more than the base.
  • To further prevent clumping, when you apply your mascara, place the wand at the base of the eyelashes. Apply mascara with back-and-forth sawing motion. The bristles of the wand will separate lashes. This way, you'll get mascara on each individual lash, instead of clumping five eyelashes together.
  • If your mascara is too thick, it is probably time to buy a new tube. Thicker mascara is harder to apply and often gives your lashes the kind of spider look that isn't too appealing.
  • To give an extra long look to your lashes: once they dry, coat the tips of the lashes two or three times with black mascara, while also drying and separating the lashes between applications. If you want very long lashes, coat them from the top.
  • Get a good mascara that fits what you need. Lengthening, volumizing, and waterproof are all considerations that will help you find it.
  • If you're wearing eyeshadow and don't have a card around with you, look down while you apply the mascara, so it will lessen the risk of getting a mascara dot on your lid. If you do, then wait for it to dry and then wipe it away with a cotton swab or tissue. If you panic when you see a mascara dot and you hurry to wipe it off with water, it will smear!
  • If you apply mascara in an up and down motion that will prevent clumps. Do it in a zig zag motion, you will get thicker lashes.
  • You must check to see if the lash base is coated as close to the skin as possible, as this shows up the shape of the eye and makes the look very natural. If you want to give the impression of not having any makeup on, coat below the lower lashes with clear mascara only and then comb them with eyebrow brush/comb after application. If you want really thick lashes, coat the upper and lower lashes with clear mascara, comb them and then coat the upper and lower lashes as with black mascara.
  • Not too much. Apply mascara sparingly and then brush it with an eyelash comb for a more natural look.
  • To make your lashes look their best, try to get the outer tips as well.
  • Tilt your head forward when doing lower lashes. It allows you to avoid getting it in your cheeks.
  • Never touch your eye when applying mascara.
  • Use a credit card or any kind of card when applying mascara. Put it on your eyelid behind your lashes and apply the mascara. This will protect your eyelid (and your eyeshadow) and help make sure you get every lash.
  • If your mascara is making your eyelashes clump, wash the wand with warm water to clean of any excess mascara. Then, just dip back in the product and apply normally for a cleaner look.
  • To avoid clumps, dot the tip on a tissue paper and gently roll and then apply. You can also run an eyelash brush gently through the lashes.
  • If you wear contact lenses, you might want to invest in a mascara safe for contacts.
  • If you want to put false eyelashes then do so before applying mascara.
  • If you have finished your old mascara then get tid of the tube but keep the brush. Clean the brush in warm water then once you have applied your mascara, use it as a brush, or you can use it for your eyebrows!
  • To thicken the eyelash faster put some baby powder on your lash, apply mascara, put baby powder on again and apply mascara again.

Warnings

  • Don't try to apply mascara without using a mirror. It will most likely go wrong.
  • Some people have allergies to different colors, different brands and different types of mascara. If you find your eyes become irritated after using waterproof you may want to try a different type. The same is true with the other brands and colors. If you are very sensitive, you can try a hypoallergenic brand such as Clinique or Almay.
  • If you have recently had a communicable eye disease such as pink eye, immediately replace your mascara. There may be germs on the wand and you don't want to risk them getting back on/in your eyes.
  • If you do poke your eye, immediately rinse your eye with water.
  • If you find that an excess of your mascara is deposited on the wand than required, use a tissue to wipe away the extra color before application. You can choose from a range of mascara colors such as brown, navy and green. Don't share your mascara with anyone else, as this may cause infection in the eye. If you have the slightest irritation, take it off immediately.
  • Make sure you aren't using a cheap/trashy brand. They are more likely to cause clumps. Try any mascara by Covergirl. It's inexpensive, and a good brand.
  • After using your mascara for about three to four months, you should throw it out even if it is still in good condition. With mascara being used so close to the eye, the wand could carry bacteria that you don't want getting into your eye, causing infection and other nasty things.
  • Don't use mascara that has gone a bit sticky or hard as it is bad for your eyes
  • Mascara can often be very scary and hard to apply, because there is always a chance you could poke your eye. If you have a steady hand and you are trying not to get too close to the root of the lashes, this should be no problem.
  • If you have a bad experience keep practicing.
  • For sensitive eyes,Clear mascara especially with curled lashes can be great way to go. The look is cleaner, more natural and much easier to remove.
