Make Cupcake Earrings

Have you always wanted to make your own jewelry, but were never quite sure how to go about it? Here is a very easy way to make a pair of cute cupcake earrings. You can give them to a loved one or you can keep them for yourself. The best part is, you only need a few materials that you can purchase from any hobby store.
Steps
- Gather your materials. See the "Things You'll Need" list below. Choose which colors you want to use for the earrings. For the earrings shown in this how-to, a brown clay was used for the cupcake base and a white clay for the whipped cream.
- Make the cupcake bases out of the brown clay. Make them as big or as little as you want.
- Add indents around the bases using the earring findings. These should mimic the little ridges often seen on cupcake cups.
- If everything turns out okay, you should have something like the picture on the right. Make as many or as few indents as you'd like.
- Roll out a bit of white clay into a thin white string. You will use this to make the whipped cream on top of the cupcake. Start on the outside rim of the cupcake and curl the string up and around until you reach the center; try to get it to look like the whipped cream on the cupcakes shown. Repeat for the other cupcake.
- Don't fuss over this. Real whipped cream doesn't always look perfect when you spray it on a cupcake - and little imperfections give your earrings character.
- Cut earring findings to the correct size using a wire cutter. They should be long enough to go from the top to the bottom of the cupcakes while still leaving a little loop on top.
- Stick the earring findings inside the cupcakes' centers.
- Bake the cupcakes. Lay a cookie sheet on an oven tray, place the cupcakes on it and then bake according to the instructions on the polymer clay package.
- After the cupcakes have finished baking, remove from the oven and let them cool.
- After they have cooled, apply a small amount of heavy-duty craft glue where the wire meets the clay. Otherwise the cupcake charms will fall off after a few wears. You can glaze them to give them a shiny finish.
- Hang the earrings onto the earring findings and enjoy your new cupcake jewellery.

Tips
- The worst you can do is burn your cupcakes - don't be afraid to make mistakes.
- You can make both earrings out of white clay, and then paint them after baking; this way, you can choose exactly what colors you want your earrings to be, and won't have to worry about the clay changing color during baking. Use acrylic paint. Don't use oil-based paints, because the oil won't stay on the earrings.
- Make your earrings shiny and dirt-resistant with an appropriate glaze. If you're only making a few and have clear nail polish on hand, use that. (Other glazes may produce less fumes, work better, or cost less in quantity.)
- There are two major polymer clay brands: Sculpy and Fimo. Choose the one that's the best for you.
- The colors of clay you can use are almost endless. Use your imagination and choose the craziest colors - whether you're into glitter or glow-in-the-dark jewellery, there's something out there for everyone.
Warnings
- Heavy-duty craft/jewelry glue will make you nauseous if not used in a well-ventilated area.
- Certain types of polymer clays can release harmful gases when baked in an oven. Be sure to bake your clay outside, or check that it is safe to bake inside
