Making an international call directly from Sweden to the US can be terribly expensive. If you're traveling, consult your cellular provider to first make sure your cell phone will be compatible with the networks in Sweden, then check whether they offer a special international calling plan. You might also be able to save money by calling during night or weekend hours, using calling cards, or using a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) program to place the call.

Steps

  1. Dial 00, the exit code to make an international call from Sweden.
    • The exit code (also known as an international access code) depends on where you're calling from. Zero-zero is the exit code for Sweden and most of Europe, but if you were placing a call from the United States or Canada you would dial 011 instead.
    • If you're using an international roaming or global cellular phone in Sweden, you still need to dial the Swedish exit code to make an international call.
  2. Dial 1, the country code that signals you're about to call the United States.
    • The USA country code also applies to other countries in the NANP, or North American Numbering Plan. These include Canada, Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago.
  3. Dial the 3-digit area code for the area you're calling in the United States.
    • You must enter the area code. If you don't know the appropriate area code for the phone number you're trying to call, visit nanpa.com/area_code_maps/ac_map_static.html and click on the appropriate state to pull up a map of area-code boundaries in that state.
    • If the 3-digit prefix is 800, 888, 877 or 866, this signals that you're dialing a toll-free number.
  4. Dial the remaining 7 digits of the phone number.
    • All US phone numbers, including mobile numbers, consist of a 3-digit area code and a 7-digit phone number. If you have any extra digits left over, they may signify an extension you must dial after connecting to the first number. In a few cases, companies use their phone number to spell out a short message and add superfluous numbers at the end to complete that message.

Tips

  • Most of the United States observe Daylight Saving Time, which is analogous to Europe's Summer Time--but the schedule is slightly different. In the United States, DST begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. In Sweden and most of Europe, Summer Time begins on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October.
  • The United States spans a total of 9 time zones. The easternmost time zone, Atlantic Standard Time, is UTC -4. Eastern Standard Time or EST, the easternmost time zone on the continental United States, is UTC -5. PST or Pacific Standard Time, the westernmost time zone on the continental United States, is UTC -8. Alaska time is UTC -9, and Hawaii-Aleutian time is UTC -10.
  • Hawaii, the Midway Islands and most of Arizona are among the parts of the United States that do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
