Making Your Own Bookmarks

  1. Find a piece of blank white paper.
  2. Draw three 2.5 in. by 2.5 in. squares, one in the corner with one on either side. Use a ruler so the lines are straight and even and the boxes are all the same size.
  3. Draw a diagonal line on the two outer boxes pointing in.
  4. Color in the halves pointing outward.
  5. Now cut out the shape, not along all of the lines drawn, but cut off the colored in sides and the outline of the large shape.
  6. Trace this onto either scrap-booking paper (for stronger bookmarks and bright designs) or construction paper.
  7. Cut out the shape.
  8. Now, flip it over so the blank side or the side you like least is facing you. Fold the triangle sides along the lines over the base square. You should apply glue to the side facing you of the first flap folded, and then stick the next folded flap to it.
  9. Hold this side down until the glue is dried.
  10. You can now decorate it any way you want! Ex: Cut the edges of the base square with fun scissors, add stickers or draw on them with markers.
  11. For more extensive designs, try making them out of newspaper or comics, or magazines. To make monsters, cut out triangles and stick them onto the first glued side so the edges are sticking out, and then fold the second triangle over. Then cut two different sized circles out of scraps and make crazy eyes.

Tips

  • Do not add any beads or do-dads to make them 3D, they will be crushed when you close the book!
  • If you add glitter, make sure to shake it off until no more flakes come off, so your book isn't ruined.
  • Do not use superglue, it does not stick to paper.
  • Wait at least a day before using, to ensure that the glue is dry.
  • Glue sticks are not strong enough, so use PVA or craft glue.

Warnings

  • Do not use paint, it will rub off on the book even after it is dry.
  • Make sure all glue is non-toxic.
  • Be careful when using scissors.
