Make Stove Top Scalloped Potatoes

Scalloped potatoes are creamy and absolutely delicious. They're perfect for tons of occasions! This recipe is easy and lets you make it on your stove, rather than the oven.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups thinly sliced peeled potatoes
  • 1 2/3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 dash pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
  • Onions & Chives (Optional)

Steps

  1. In a small saucepan, melt butter and blend in flour.
  2. Let sit for a minute.
  3. Add all of cold milk, stirring with a whisk.
  4. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Cook sauce on low until smooth and boiling, stirring occasionally with a whisk.
  6. Reduce heat and stir in most of the cheese.
  7. Add potatoes, as well as onions and chives, if desired.
  8. Simmer covered until potatoes are tender. Stir occasionally, about every minute or two.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining cheese on top.
  10. Simmer uncovered until ready and serve. This makes 6 servings.

Tips

  • For an even creamier scalloped potatoes, you can use half and half milk and cream instead of just milk.
  • To make the potatoes slightly spicier, add some cayenne pepper to it.

Warnings

  • Adjust the heat and remember to stir, or you may burn your potatoes!
