Gmail allows you to archive your old email messages so that they stop cluttering up your inbox. This hides them from view but keeps them around in case you need to reference them again. There are several ways you can find your archived messages, though there is no way to visually tell if a message has been archived or not, and there is no "Archived" section of your inbox.

Steps

Using the Gmail Website

  1. Log into your Gmail account in a web browser.
  2. Search for an archived message. Archived messages will still appear as search results, so if you know the sender, subject, part of the body, or any other part of the message, search for it using the search bar at the top of the page.
  3. Look through your labels. If a label was applied to a message that was archived, it can still be found sorted by that label. Browse through your labels on the left side of the page.
  4. Click "More" in the left menu and select "All Mail". This will display all of the mail in your Gmail account, regardless of its label or whether or not it's archived.
    • Archived messages are not indicated by any label or other indicator. An archived message simply has the "Inbox" label removed so that it no longer appears in your inbox.
  5. Click "Move to Inbox" to move the message out of the archive. It will be returned to your inbox and sorted by its original date.[1]

Using Your Mobile App

  1. Open your Gmail app. Ensure that you are logged in with your Google account.
  2. Search for an archived message. Archived messages will still appear as search results, so if you know the sender, subject, part of the body, or any other part of the message, search for it by tapping the magnifying glass at the top of the screen.
  3. Look through your labels. If a label was applied to a message that was archived, it can still be found sorted by that label. Tap the Menu button in the upper-left corner of the screen and scroll down to browse through your labels.
  4. Tap the Menu button and tap "All mail". This will display all of the mail in your Gmail account, regardless of its label or whether or not it's archived.
    • Archived messages are not indicated by any label or other indicator. An archived message simply has the "Inbox" label removed so that it no longer appears in your inbox.
  5. Tap the Menu button in the upper-right corner of an open archived message. Tap "Move to Inbox" to return the archived message back to the inbox.
