This wikiHow teaches you how to force your iPhone to exit Put-an-iPod-or-iPhone-into-DFU-Mode mode.

10 Second Summary

iPhone 7: Hold down the Lock and Volume Down buttons until the white Apple logo appears. Older iPhones: Hold down the Lock and Home buttons until the white Apple logo appears.

Steps

Force-Restarting Your iPhone

  1. Hold down your iPhone's Lock button and Home button. Do this simultaneously. The Lock button is either on the right side of your iPhone's casing (iPhone 6 and up) or on top of the iPhone's casing (iPhone's 5S and down).
    • On an iPhone 7, you'll hold down the Volume Down button instead of the Home button.
  2. Wait for the Apple logo to appear. This will likely take around ten seconds.
  3. Release the buttons. Your phone will restart normally, arriving at the lock screen once it's finished and signifying that your iPhone is no longer in DFU mode.

Restoring Your iPhone with iTunes

  1. Open the iTunes window. Since iTunes must be open and your phone must be connected to your computer in order for your phone to be in DFU mode, you simply need to click the iTunes window to bring it to the foreground in order to begin.
  2. Click Restore iPhone. It's on the right side of the iTunes window. If your iPhone is in DFU mode, you shouldn't be able to access any of your music or apps--you'll simply have the iPhone window open.[1]
  3. Click Restore and Update when prompted. Doing so will erase all data on your iPhone and install the latest version of iOS. This process will take several minutes.
  4. Wait for your iPhone to finish updating. Once it finishes updating, you'll have the option to Restore-iPhone-from-Backup, which will restore your contacts, messages, photos, and any other data present in the backup.
