In Windows XP, icons are 32x32 by default. However, icons are provided in 48x48 format, and some even larger. In Windows 98, there was a box you could check off to accomplish this easily. However, it is not as intuitive in Windows XP as in Windows 98.

Steps

  1. Right-click on the desktop.
  2. Click Properties in the menu that appears.
  3. Click on the Appearance tab.
  4. Click on the Advanced button.
  5. Select Icon in the item box.
  6. Type in 48 in the nearby box which says 32 by default.
  7. Change the Font size type 10.
  8. Click Apply to see how it looks, and then OK if you like it.

Tips

  • Try setting the size to a value other than 32 or 48. If you really need room on your desktop, set it to 16 for small icons.

Warnings

  • Even if you set it back, the icons will be rearranged in a way most people wouldn't like. Be prepared to fix your desktop layout, which may be a hard task depending on how many icons you have.
