E.T. the extra terrestrial is a life changing movie. And E.T's ghostly appearance for Halloween was great. With just a little imagination and effort, your kids can become ET for Halloween this year.

Steps

  1. Wrap entire head with cotton batting and masking tape in the shape of E.T.'s head. Take time and make it look exactly like it did in the film. Make sure to leave holes for breathing
  2. Use a pen to dot the eye areas and remove the stuffing from this area.
  3. Draw the eye holes in before trying to cut out the holes so you have them marked evenly.
  4. Cut the eye areas, and fix ping pong balls to the head in the appropriate spots. Create eye lids with bits of cotton and rubber cement. Cut out pupils from color magazine advertisement, glue in place with Elmer's glue, and coat the surface of the eyeball with 5 min epoxy to give it a permanent "wet look".
  5. Coat the entire E.T. shaped head with rubber cement for a realistic and flexible skin.
  6. Form fit the mouth to your child's mouth and glue down edges with spirit gum.
  7. Discolor child's teeth with professional tooth stain, available at most hi-end theatrical costume shops.
  8. Add veins and coloring to complete the illusion. The form-fit mask will give your child a wider head look like "ET."
  9. Remove the shoes' strings and spray paint the shoes. Let them dry, then put the shoes' strings back in.
  10. Dress your child up in the ghostly costume and get ready for your own "ET" adventures!

Tips

  • If possible find your child a "Trick or Treat" bag that has "ET" on it, or come up with your own idea.
  • They can add in a funny or clumsy walk, and they will be in character quite nicely.
  • Have your child start practicing the E.T. voice for a few months before Halloween, so as to avoid embarrassment with a poorly done E.T. voice.
  • Have a toy phone on hand, if you want to further the look, such as "ET phone home." The child can carry it around with them without any trouble at all.
  • Masking tape may be needed if painting the shoes two tone.
  • If you want more of a "girlie" girl "ET", add earrings or a tiny dress.
  • Add a glowing orange flashlight to a rubber monster hand for added realism
  • At the end of the night, have your kid lay by a sewage drain for photographs to duplicate E.T. death scene from the film.

Warnings

  • Carefully secure the shoes on your child's feet with the shoe strings, a sock can be stuffed in the toe area of each shoe to secure the shoes more.

Things You'll Need

  • Ping Pongs
  • Fake hair & Cloth
  • White sheet
  • Old pair of shoes that are way too big (with shoe strings) for your child
  • Large rim hat (straw or light colored one) works best; it will be to give your child's head a larger appearance.
  • Red spray paint for the shoes, and possibly white, for a two tone look (unless the shoes are already white).
