It seems that hair extensions have become very popular, But as they have increased in popularity, the quality of work has gone down.

It is important to find a Professional who is charging rates which reflect their work. Usually those charging less than $500.00 for fusion hair extensions are either just beginning, practicing, or have not built up enough repeat clientele. It is never worth saving money going to someone who might be practicing on your hair. Your hair will pay the price. Always go to someone who has been performing fusion for years and also continues to train and teach. It is important to ask for maintenance instructions from the person installing the extensions. Lots of people are unaware of how to maintain their fusion hair extensions.

Steps

  1. Do not wash your hair until 48 hours after the extensions have been installed.
  2. Brush dry the hair out completely with an extension brush before entering the shower and before bedtime. It prevents extension matting and tangling, and spreads nourishing oil throughout the extensions.
  3. Wash every 2 days or less and do not wash your hair upside down. Do not scrub hair aggressively. Do not get shampoo or conditioner on the bonds.
  4. Use good quality hair shampoo and conditioner. Stay away from ones that contain sulfur and alcohol as it breaks down the bond faster than desired.
  5. Use a thermal heat protectant solution when styling hair. Do not flat iron or apply excessive heat to the bond itself. Remember that it was installed with heat!
  6. At bedtime, braid hair into two side braids or in a high ponytail to prevent tangling and matting at the root area. Use a satin pillow to also prevent tangling.
  7. Avoid salt water and chlorine water. Wear a swim cap.
  8. If you follow these aftercare instructions, your hair extensions will remain beautiful and natural!
  9. Never fall sleep on wet hair extensions. Make sure the hair and bonds are dry before bedtime to avoid matting.

Tips

  • If you relax your hair or receive color treatments, have these done prior the fusion installation. At least two weeks is ideal.
  • Make sure to find non-heat, no glue methods which are gentle on hair.
  • Do not allow the scalp to become too greasy. It is important to keep the scalp clean and free of heavy oils.
  • Never sleep on wet extensions! This is bound to cause matting at the roots!
  • If you chose a non heat fusion method, know that with the non heat fusion methods, like Keratin Silk, the hair continues to grow and remains healthy. Glue based bonds are damaging to the hair and require more maintenance.
  • If you prefer heat based methods seek out ones that are not as harsh as the pure glue fusion such as a protein type adhesive.
  • Non Heat Fusion is known to grow the hair. People report the most growth because it protects the hair and it's gentle on the hair.

Warnings

  • Non Heat Fusion does not damage the hair when it is removed and removal takes about 45 minutes to an hour. With glue based fusion, acetone is sometimes used to crumble the extensions from the hair. This is very damaging. Non Heat Fusion does not require special products to remove them so the removal is simple, quick, and gentle on the hair. Keratin Fusions are easier to remove than glue based fusion and require an oily substance or a special removal cream to dissolve the attachment.
  • If proper care is not given, you risk damaging the hair when the extensions will be removed, If you notice matting or dreading above the bond, see a extension specialist right away.
