Are you tired of seeing either the default icon or an older picture of yourself on Facebook? Find out how to change/edit it with the steps in this article.

Steps

From Your Facebook Timeline

  1. Visit and log in to your Facebook account from the Facebook home page in your web browser.
  2. Look for and click your name with your current profile picture at the top right corner of the screen. It'll either be a default style picture if you've never changed it before and are just starting on Facebook, or your current picture if you've been on Facebook but need a refresher course on these steps. Doing so, will take you to your Facebook timeline.
  3. Hover over top of your profile picture, and a box containing a button for changing your profile picture should appear. Do not slide your mouse outside of your profile picture and into neither the white-colored outside border of your profile image, your cover photo or any other part of your Facebook timeline.
  4. Click this button that’s clearly labeled “Update Profile Picture”.
  5. Locate and click the photo you’d like to pick as your next profile photo. Facebook gives people two choices from the Facebook website (if you have webcam access): “Upload Photo” or to “Take Photo" or you can choose one of your own photos you've already added to one of your Facebook photo albums before that is located below these two options.
    • While Facebook emphasizes people to use a picture of their face, some people refuse to comply with standard practice and use something totally different than what they are completely told to do, but go with gut instinct and pick something acceptable that everyone in the public area can appropriately see. ‘’’No nude or embarrassing photos of you, nor others' vicious or similar acts.’’’
    • For those thinking about taking a new photo with their webcam, click "Take photo" - give your browser access to your webcam and click "Take picture" once your came is showing who you really are - then follow through instead.
  6. Click the picture you’d like to use or have the profile picture tool take a new picture for you. You’ll then be directed to a page where Facebook will ask you to crop your picture down. Facebook only allows people to use certain sized pictures for their Facebook profile photo.
  7. Crop your photo to the Facebook-appropriate size. Move and drag the corners of the highlighted box to select the portion of the picture you’d like to use for your profile photo. You can use the slider underneath the picture to help crop the picture and slide it from one end to the other, or re-position the crop of the photo into a different area of the photo by dragging the photo around the cropping box by dragging it with your mouse until the highlighted area is shown and that place will become your profile picture of choice.
  8. Locate and click the “Save” button at the bottom right hand corner of the Facebook profile picture window underneath the original picture. Once a dialog box appears that says the change was made, you can rest assured the change has taken place and the change is live.

From Your Facebook Photo Albums

  3. Open the page containing all of your Facebook photos in your Facebook photo albums. You can do this, by clicking the Photos button that is located directly underneath your cover image and to the right of the tab marked Timeline and to the left of the button marked "More".
  4. Locate and click the photo you’d like to pick as your next profile photo. While Facebook emphasizes people to use a picture of their face, some people refuse to comply with standard practice and use something totally different than what they are completely told to do, but go with gut instinct and pick something acceptable that everyone in the public area can appropriately see. ‘’’No nude or embarrassing photos of you, nor others' vicious or similar acts.’’’[[Image:Edit Profile Pictures on Facebook Step 6 Version 2.jpg|center]
  5. Hover over the picture from the preview and tell Facebook that you'd like to make the photo you've selected your current profile photo. Click the "Make Profile Photo" down near the bottom of the photo.
  7. Locate and click the “Save” button at the bottom right hand corner of the Facebook profile picture window underneath the original picture. Once a dialog box appears that says the change was made, you can rest assured the change has taken place and the change is live.

Tips

  • If you want to fix your “Cover Photo” from your Timeline View instead, please read the article Customize Your Facebook Timeline for details.
  • At all times, your account must have some type of photo that associates you to the account. Facebook will use a default picture at sign-up time if you choose not to upload a photo as your personalized photo for your account. However, with it being super-intuitive to upload a photo to Facebook from multiple sources, it should be super easy to find a profile picture that fits every person’s lifestyle and makes sense to make your account act like you.
  • Determine if you'd like to make the change permanent or temporary. While most often you'll not want to change your photo on a temporary basis, Facebook has now given it's users a choice to make their profile photo change only temporary and replace it with the other one after this time has expired. If you'd like to make the change more permanent, don't click the "Make Temporary" button from the left corner of the window (and follow the steps Facebook gives you) but follow the remainder of the steps presented here instead - skipping this note.
