Curtain swags can add an element of beauty to any window. There are many styles available to choose from, and knowing how to hang a curtain swag properly will largely depend upon what type you select. The installation can be quick and easy and can allow you to turn your windows from dull to fabulous in only a few steps.

Steps

  1. Determine the curtain swag style that suits your needs and style. Classic curtain swags and tails are the most popular because they tend to be more elegant and mesh well with just about any full-length curtain. However, there are other options to consider, including scarf curtain swags and fishtail swags.
  2. Decide what type of curtain rod works best with your curtain swag. The rod will be visible after installation, and it needs to complement the look you are trying to achieve.
  3. Measure the exact size of the window or windows you will be covering. You need to know the curtain swags' size and length.
  4. Purchase the curtain rod and swag curtain, and remove them from the packaging.
  5. Attach the curtain rod brackets to the outside of your window, approximately 2 to 3 inches (5.1 to 7.6 cm) above the frame of the window. The brackets and screws to mount them should be included with the rods and can be installed using a screwdriver or power drill if necessary. Hang the rod onto the brackets.
  6. Fold the curtain swag exactly in half. Insert the straight pin that was included in the curtain packaging into the fold to mark the middle of the scarf.
  7. Clip the center of the scarf to the center of your curtain rod. Remove the straight pin once the scarf is secured. The clips should also be provided in the package from the curtain's manufacturer.
  8. Wrap the curtain swag around the curtain rod several times on each side to create a draping effect. Wrap it the same number of times on each side of the center clip so the effect is uniform.
  9. Step back from the window and examine the swag. The tails, or scarf ends, should hang at the same height, and the droop in your swag wraps should also be equal. Adjust the curtains to your liking.

Tips

  • While wrapping the curtain swag around the curtain rod, you may need to experiment on what look works best for you. A good rule of thumb is 2 to 4 wraps (1 or 2 on each side) for a smaller window, and 8 to 10 times (4 to 5 on each side) for window that's larger.
  • The more folds and creases you introduce in the swag, the more formal the valance will appear.
  • If you would like your swag to hang a little lower, wrap the scarf around the rod only once per side, and pull the center of each wrapped section downward toward the ground until you achieve the effect you desire.
  • When installing curtain swags, the rod should sit approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) above the window opening. If you hang it any higher, it may not cover the top of the window properly.
