Find out an IP Address and Person's Geographical Location from Outlook Express E‐mail
You may need to know how to find the IP address of the person sending an e-mail for a few reasons. Some of them include reporting a scam, and identifying a sender whom you think you might know but can not recall from the e-mail. Note: for the privacy of the person the last few digits in his IP address are intentionally replaced by xx.xxx.
Steps
- Open up the e-mail in question.
- Click on the "View" option and make sure "All Headers" is checked on the toolbar.
- Click on option File > Properties > Tab Details, and then click on "Message Source" button - it will open the message's all the headers.
- Find a string "X-Originating IP" followed by IP address in this format: xx.xxx.xx.xxx (it varies from person to person though). IF you don't find X-originating, look for the IP starting in the series, usually will be in the last of the list.
- Highlight ONLY this IP address (without parentheses) and press CTRL+C to copy to clipboard.
- Go to this website and register an account for free.
- Click on the "Real Time IP Locator" option (on the left side).
- Place a cursor inside the little window and press CTRL+V to paste the IP address ... it should look like on the image.
- Click on the "Where is it?" button. It should take a few seconds to get a result.
- Scroll the screen slightly down and you'll find the sender's geographical location.
Tips
- When you copy an IP address (in step 5) it's important to omit the parentheses around it.
- Make sure to choose a "Real Time IP Locator" as it will give you a more accurate result.
