Do you like the way ponytails look, but wish your hair was longer? Or maybe you'd like to do a ponytail, but hide the hairband. With a few quick tricks, you can make your hair look longer or hide the hairband. Either way, an illusion ponytail will create a stunning stylish look.

Steps

Making an Illusion Ponytail to Make Your Hair Look Longer

  1. Make a half ponytail. Comb and gather the top half of your hair up into a high ponytail. Secure it with an elastic hairband.[1]
  2. Pin the ponytail ends. Take bobby pins and pin the ends of the ponytail to the top of your head.[2]
    • This is just to get your hair out of the way while you make the second ponytail, so don't worry about where you pin it.
  3. Make another ponytail. Gather up the loose hair below your top ponytail. Comb it into a low ponytail and secure it with an elastic hairband.[3]
  4. Make the lower ponytail topsy-turvy. Using the thumb and index fingers of both hands, place them in the center if your hair, right above and below the elastic band. Pull your hands apart about an inch, creating a gap. Flip the lower ponytail towards your head and through the gap. Pull it through.[4]
    • Making it topsy-turvy will keep it from sticking out and away from your head too much.
  5. Unpin the top ponytail. Remove the bobby pins from the top ponytail.[5]
  6. Blend the two ponytails and secure. Gently run your fingers through your hair so that the two ponytails blend together.[6]
    • To completely hide the lower ponytail, take a few strands of hair from the side of one ponytail and pin it to your lower scalp. Do this on the other side as well.[7] This works best with slightly curly or wavy hair.

Making an Illusion Ponytail to Cover the Hairband

  1. Make a high ponytail. Comb your hair into a nice high ponytail. Secure it with an elastic hairband.
  2. Separate a small part of your hair from the ponytail. Gather about a quarter of the hair below the ponytail.
    • If you're having trouble separating the hair, you may need to take out the elastic hairband.
  3. Secure the ponytail. Tie the main/big part of the ponytail with the elastic band. At this point, you should have a segment of hair loosely hanging below the ponytail.
  4. Cover the hairband with your hair. Take the loose segment of hair and wrap it around the elastic band.
    • Depending on how long your hair is, you may need to wrap it around the hairband several times.
  5. Secure the covered ponytail. Use bobby pins and pin them to the ends of the hair you wrapped. This will secure it and help hold the ponytail in place.
  6. Check your ponytail. Look to make sure there are no fly aways or bits of hair sticking out from your ponytail. Make sure the hairband is completely covered by your hair.

Tips

  • Wash and dry your hair a little bit before you start so your hair is tame.
  • Make sure your hair is completely brushed or it will be harder to style.
  • If you have extreme layers and shorter hair, you may have trouble pulling your hair into the ponytail.
