Despite all of the hair disasters you see and hear about, cutting your own hair (if you are okay with short hair) can be very easy and even fun. It is also a great way to save money.

Steps

  1. Buy hair clippers with guide combs up to 1", a comb is also helpful. Oil clippers following manufacturer instructions. Put 1" attachment on clippers.
  2. Wash and dry your hair.
  3. Turn clippers on and run the clippers all over your head. Make multiple passes in different directions. Occasionally comb through to get out all the cut hair.
  4. Turn clippers off and remove guide. Flip clippers over and trim sideburns to the desired length.

Tips

  • Cut the hair around and behind the ear evenly. Just make sure that the guide is always flat against your head.
  • Before cutting make sure your hair is dry. Wet hair might clog up the clippers.
  • If you mess up a little on the sideburns don't keep on cutting it shorter just leave it and let it grow out a little
  • It makes cleaning a lot easier if you have a hard floor without carpet.
  • Get high quality clippers that have guides that go up to 1".
  • A table or counter to lay out your clippers and guides will help speed the process up.

Warnings

  • If you follow these steps you will end up with a short haircut. It does not look like a crew cut or buzzcut but it is a length that is typically considered a men's cut. Some women might want their hair this short or buzzed but if you don't want really short hair you might want to find another option.
