If you've forgotten your old PlayStation 2's parental control password, or you bought it from a garage sale and can't watch any movies, you may be scratching your head about what to do next. Thankfully, changing the parental control password, or disabling it completely, only takes a few steps. Follow this guide to find out how.

Steps

Reset the Code

  1. Insert a restricted DVD movie. Once it begins playing, the PS2 will prompt you to change the parental controls in order to watch the movie. Select Yes and the PS2 will ask you for the password. Press the Select button on your controller, located near the center.
  2. Delete the password. By pressing Select, you are beginning the password reset function. The PS2 will ask you to input the password to continue. Enter the password 7444 and select OK.
  3. Enter a new password. Enter and easy to remember password such as 0000 so that you can easily access your movies in the future. The PS2 will confirm that the password was changed and return you to the DVD menu. To disable the parental controls altogether, follow the next section.

Turn off the Code

  1. Insert a DVD movie into the PS2. Once the movie begins to play, press the Select button on the controller. This will open up a menu of icons. Select the Stop icon and click the X button. The menu will close and the movie will stop. Press Select again and press the Stop button again. This will turn the button gray.
  2. Click the Setup icon. The icon looks like a toolbox or briefcase. Use the Right direction button on the controller to navigate to the Custom Setup screen. Hit Down on the controller until you select Parental Control Settings. Press the Right direction button to select it.
  3. Enter your password. Since you’ve reset the password in the previous section, enter your newly created password now.
  4. Choose your protection level. Scroll down until you reach the Level option. You can turn off parental controls by moving the meter to the top, above number 8. Press Select several times until all your menus are closed.
  5. Reset the PS2. Once your parental control settings are changed and you have exited out of the menus, you can reset the PS2 to save your settings. Press the power button in the front to reset the machine.
