Microsoft’s PowerPoint software helps you create timed presentations for meetings or projects. However, it has limitations, since people who watch the presentation remotely must have PowerPoint on their computer or device. You can convert a PowerPoint presentation to WMV, MP4, AVI and other video formats.

Steps

Converting PPT to .WMV Format

  1. Develop your PowerPoint presentation. Make sure you are happy with the timing, slide content and audio. You will not be able to change the video file.
    • You will need to have PowerPoint 2010 or later to save your presentation as a video.
  2. Consider adding narration to your presentation. To record a narration, set up your microphone. Then click “Record Slide Show” in the Slide Show tab.
    • Check the boxes to use your mouse as a laser pointer and narrate the slideshow before you begin.
    • Click “Start Recording” and “Pause” as you go through your slideshow. Click “End Show” when you are done.
    • Set up the PPT to automatically play the narration.[1]
  3. Open your finalized PowerPoint file. Click “File” in PowerPoint. Select “Save & Send” in the dropdown list.
  4. Choose “Create a Video” on the page of options. The following are three types of videos you can create:
    • To make a high-resolution video, click the “Computer & HD Display” option. If you want the audience to see the best possible version, no matter the size, this is the best choice.
    • To make a medium quality video, click the “Internet & DVD” option. This is great for posting the video on a website or YouTube.
    • To make a low-resolution video, click “Portable Devices,” so that you can send it to people with small devices.
  5. Adjust the options for your video. You can choose to include audio and narration. You can also adjust the amount of time that each slide will appear. The default is five seconds.
  6. Select “Create Video.” Name the file according to its title or purpose. Click “Save.”
  7. Wait several minutes to several hours, depending upon the length of the presentation and the resolution of the video. Find it in the folder you selected or on your desktop. You should be able to share it freely to people with Windows Media Player.
    • You can also convert this video to other video formats using one of the following methods.[2]

Converting a PPT to MP4

  1. Save your PowerPoint presentation. Make sure to narrate or add audio and set timings before you save it. The PPT file must also be less than one gigabyte to use this method.
    • This method will work with PowerPoint programs that were created before PowerPoint 2010.
  2. Go to authorstream.com. Sign up for an account or sign in through your Facebook profile. Author Stream hosts and converts PowerPoint files for free.
  3. Click the option to upload a PowerPoint. Select your PPT file from your computer. Wait for it to upload.
  4. Wait for Author Stream to convert your PPT to MP4. It should happen automatically, but it will take several minutes or up to an hour. You will receive an email when the conversion is complete.
  5. Download the MP4 file to your computer or use the Author Stream hosting site to link the video to a website or YouTube account.[3]

Converting a PPT to AVI

  1. Save your PowerPoint presentation. Make sure all narration and timing is final.
  2. Go to Download.cnet.com. Search for “PPT Conversion.” Read the reviews and choose a program that is reviewed highly and is free.
    • Possible programs include GeoVid, boilSoft PowerPoint to Video DVD, PPTmovie, PPT on TV or Wondershare PPT2Video.[4]
    • Ensure you download all software programs from a trusted source.
  3. Open the software program. Add your PPT file to the conversion program.
  4. Select “AVI” or another file type as the new format. You can also choose the resolution in some programs. Click “Convert.”
  5. Save your file to a selected location. You can now send the file, post it to a website or share it with mobile devices.

Converting a PPT Using Camtasia

  1. Ensure you currently have Microsoft Office with PowerPoint on the computer you are using.
  2. Download the Free Trial of camtasia at http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-accessories.html. Camtasia may be a good paid software program for people who frequently create video tutorials or presentations.
  3. Open the file and install it once it has downloaded. This will also install the Camtasia for PowerPoint plug-in.
  4. Open PowerPoint. Click the “Plug-ins” option. It will allow you access to Camtasia to record your presentation.
  5. Finish and save your PowerPoint on your computer. Keep the slideshow you want to convert open. Return to PowerPoint.
    • Camtasia also offers attractive PowerPoint templates if you haven’t yet created your presentation.
  6. Start your presentation. Record it as it plays by pressing the plug-in “Record” button. Then, select “Click to Begin Recording.”
  7. Stop the recording by choosing “End” when it is finished. The Camtasia video file will be saved to your computer.
  8. Return to the plug-in and select “Produce and Share” to post it to YouTube. Choose to save it as an MP4 if you want to save it to your computer.

Tips

  • Use your computer to save your MP4, WMV or AVI file to a DVD. After it is burned, you can send your PowerPoint video to clients on a DVD.
