Lots of people want to have fun in the summertime. An energetic and healthy way to enjoy yourself is to have a picnic, and what's a summer picnic without the perfect simple sandwich?

Steps

  1. Choose your bread. Some breads are sliced. You can also choose a bun bread. Sometimes you can use an unsliced bread that you roll and slice after.
  2. Decide what you want to put inside. There are tons of toppings, from the classic peanut butter and jelly to the more complex ones, such as tuna and vegetables. Choose whatever you want but be careful to mix flavors that taste good together.
  3. Choose which condiments you'd like, such as mayonnaise, salt & pepper, vegetable salt, sauce, pickles, chutney, etc.
  4. Make up your sandwiches. You can pre-cut them if you like or leave whole but remember to take a sharp knife to cut them if you take them whole. Encase in greaseproof paper or small sandwich bags if going to a picnic.

Tips

  • Ask your picnic attendees what they want on the sandwich; simple but often not done!
  • Topping ideas include: Cheese; sliced meat or vegetarian options; grated cheese/cucumber; tomato slices; spreads; peanut or other nut butters; Nutella; leftover meats from the fridge (e.g. chicken pieces) with mayonnaise or sauce; Vegemite; tuna fish; sardines; tabouli; cream cheese; salad; egg (or scrambled tofu substitute); jam/jelly; sliced banana & many, many more.
  • Don't put too much into your sandwich or you'll end up with a big mess; keep your proportions small.
  • Have fun.
  • If you will go a while without eating your sandwiches, preserve them in an icebox. Make sure the sandwiches are contained in waterproof bags or other containers, because the ice will melt.
  • Pack some drinks as well; chances are your picnickers  will get thirsty.

Warnings

  • If anyone at your picnic has allergies, ask them to let you know in advance what they can't eat and how serious the allergy is. Some people's allergies are triggered by the mere presence of a food; other people can tolerate it being around, as long as they're not consuming it. It can also help to have one wheat-free option, just in case someone has a gluten intolerance.
  • If you use a sharp knife in place of a butter knife for spreading, be careful not to cut yourself. And remember next time to include the butter knife in the picnic basket!
  • Plastic bags are not toys! Keep away from children! Always give your child the sandwich and keep the plastic bag back at the same time - put it somewhere inaccessible during the picnic.
