The Amazon Kindle is an e-reader that allows its users to read books, newspapers and magazines and play games on a tablet. The Kindle screen mimics the appearance of book pages in shades of gray. Books and other media can be bought in the Kindle store and they will be transferred to your device using Amazon's patented "Whispernet" wireless technology. As of 2010, Kindle books that are bought for the tablet can also be read on Android phones. This article will tell you how to buy books for your Kindle.

Steps

  1. Make sure your Kindle is connected to your Amazon account. Set up an Amazon account online and save a credit card to the account. On your Kindle menu, type in your Amazon email and password. After you have accomplished this, you will not need to enter credit card details every time you buy a book.
  2. Turn on your Kindle. The power button is on the bottom.
  3. Press the "Menu" button on your keypad.
  4. Use your arrow keys to select "Shop in Kindle Store" in the pop up dialogue box. Press the middle "Enter" button to select that option.
    • If your Kindle's WiFi option is currently off, it will ask you to turn on networking.
  5. Click on the "Books" option on the Kindle interface. It should be the first option under the word "Browse." Below it you will see "Newspapers" and "Books."
  6. Choose the genre you would like to browse, such as "Fiction," "Non-Fiction," "Romance," "Science," etc.
    • If you want to search for a specific book, go to the search box at the bottom of the interface. Type the name of the book or author and click "Enter."
  7. Use your up and down arrow keys to click through the book titles.
  8. Press the "Enter" key when you have scrolled through the list and found the title you want. Make sure it is highlighted in dark gray before you press "Enter."
  9. Read an excerpt of the description of the book, and click "More" to read the full description. You may need to use your arrow keys to browse through more than 1 page.
    • You can also read customer reviews to find out more information. If you are not sure about your purchase, opt to try a sample of the book. This option is under the "Buy" button.
  10. Press your Back button to return to the list of books. Browse until you find the right book to buy.

Purchase a Book

  1. Click the "Buy" button to the right of the description, if you have found the title you want.
  2. Wait for a screen to appear that says your book is being sent via Whispernet and will be available on your Home screen in a few moments.
  3. Refrain from clicking the Buy button more than once, unless you have waited a few minutes and are sure that the Buy option was not selected.
  4. Click the "Home" button on your Kindle keypad and your book should be the first title on the Home screen.
  5. Click on the title to begin reading your new Kindle book.
