Red envelopes or packets are commonly given in Chinese celebrations with cash inside. If you've got a few extra red packets around, you can make a seashell from the square ones that can be placed anywhere for decoration during Chinese New Year or just to add a unique touch to any room.

Steps

  1. Fold the red packet in half.
  2. Cut the folded side of the packet into strips measuring about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} each. Make sure you leave about {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} around the edges before you start cutting, as you are going to staple the edges together later.
  3. Open up the folded red packet.
  4. Bring together two opposite corners and staple them together.
  5. Poke a hole through one of the ends, put a thread through it and tie a knot in the end of the thread. This step is optional - make a hole only if you intend to hang your seashell.
  6. Finished.

Tips

  • You can use a rectangular red packet, but the result would look a little different.
  • You can change the length of the thread and hang the seashells at different heights together.
  • Make sure the decorated side of the red packet is on the outside before you fold.

Warnings

  • Be careful when using the scissors.
  • Do not cut the red packet to the edge. If you do so, you'll have to start all over again.

Things You'll Need

  • A square red packet
  • Scissors
  • Stapler
  • Thread
  • Pen/Needle/something sharp
