The Paisley pattern – originally from India and Iran - is named after the Scottish town whose weaving industry became the foremost producer of the pattern in the early 19th century. This tutorial shows you how to draw this pattern, which you can use to decorate all kinds of things!

Steps

  1. In pencil, sketch the shape. Draw a circle, then add a curved point to it, like a drooping teardrop or a comma.
  2. Draw over the outline with a fineliner, and add a smaller border line inside. Erase your pencil lines.
  3. Start drawing shapes inside – have fun and let yourself doodle! Use a combination of round and pointed shapes, with lots of curved lines. Keep things mostly symmetrical.
  4. Fill in the shapes you've made with further details. Don't worry about getting everything perfectly even – when drawing a pattern by hand, small variations are part of the charm.
  5. Fill in the border with similar patterns.
  6. You're done! Why not do a few more? Try out different patterns, and even add them to the outside of your base shape.
