Morir Soñando, literally translated to mean "to die dreaming", is a signature drink of the Dominican Republic. Read on to find out how to create this popular, tropical treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups (475 ml) orange juice
  • 1/2 cup (100 g) sugar
  • 4 cups (950 ml) evaporated milk or half and half
  • 2 cups of crushed ice, divided

Steps

  1. Pour the orange juice into 1 of the 2 larger containers. The orange juice should have already been measured out to 2 cups.
  2. Add 1/2 cup of sugar into the same container to combine the orange juice and sugar.
  3. Mix thoroughly. Most of the times, simply mixing with a spoon will not be enough for this combination. To make sure it mixes well, pour the orange juice and sugar mix from its current larger container into the smaller container picked for mixing. Pour the mix back into the larger container and repeat until the sugar is dissolved.
  4. Add 1 cup of the crushed ice to the mix. Simply adding ice cubes will not work!
  5. Mix ice in thoroughly. Do this by pouring the ice and orange juice/sugar combo from container to container, as in step 3. The mixture must be as cold as possible.
  6. Pour the evaporated milk into the unused container. The milk should have been measured out to 4 cups.
  7. Add 1 cup of crushed ice to the milk.
  8. Mix ice in thoroughly. Do this by pouring the milk and ice from the current larger container to the smaller mixing container, just as in Step 3 and 5. Work quickly so the orange juice mix does not become warm.
  9. Combine the milk and orange juice mixes. Do this by pouring from container to container. Work quickly! If poured too slowly, the mixture will curdle!
  10. Place the drink into a pitcher for easy pouring and serve!

Tips

  • This Dominican drink is extremely flexible and allows for plenty of customization.
  • Fresh squeezed orange juice not only adds to the tropical experience, but makes for the best drink.
  • After mixing the ice into the orange juice/sugar combo, add sugar if needed.
  • When serving, top off with fresh slices of pineapple or another favorite fruit and serve with a straw to complete the look.
  • It is very common to substitute the orange juice for lemon juice.

Things You'll Need
