This wikiHow teaches you how to turn on an iPhone without using the Lock button to do so.

10 Second Summary

Plug your iPhone into a charger and wait for it to start up.

Steps

  1. Plug the power adapter into a wall socket. You'll see two prongs that should fit into the wall like any other standard plug on one side of the power adapter (the white cube).
  2. Attach the USB end of the cable to the adapter. The USB end of the charger is a rectangular piece of exposed metal with a block of plastic inside of it. It plugs into the rectangular slot on the outward-facing side of the power adapter.
    • If you're having trouble fitting the USB end into the adapter, try flipping the USB end over.
  3. Determine the type of charger you have. There are two types of iPhone charger cables:
    • Lightning - iPhone 5 and up. The charging end is narrow and flat.
    • 30-pin - iPhone 4S and down. The charging end is wide and flat.
  4. Insert the other end of the cable into the bottom of the iPhone. If you're using a Lightning cable, the charger will fit no matter how you insert it into the device's charging port. A 30-pin charger must be inserted with the grey rectangle icon on side of the charger facing the same way as the iPhone's screen.
  5. Wait for the white Apple logo to appear on-screen. This icon is indicative of your iPhone powering on; after a few seconds, you'll arrive at the Lock screen.
    • Once your iPhone finishes starting up, press the Home button and input your passcode to finish unlocking the phone.
    • If you see a battery outline with a red line in it, this means your iPhone needs a few minutes of charging before it will be able to start up.

Tips

  • Consider sending your iPhone in to Apple to get the Lock button fixed. If your iPhone is under warranty, the process may even be free.
  • If your iPhone's Lock button is broken because of water damage, an electrical surge, or some other internal issue, you likely won't be able to turn it on by simply plugging it in. Instead, take your phone to an Apple technician to see if it is repairable.

Warnings

  • Attempting to repair a broken Lock button on your own will void your warranty.
