This sweater pattern for a 12-inch Sunkid Teddy Bear is quick and easy, and looks great too! It is a good choice for beginners since you progress quickly, and mistakes do not show well. This sweater also looks great if knitted with stripes in different colors.

Steps

  1. Back/Front: The sweater is knitted in the round. Cast on 134 stitches and divide them.

1st row: 1 purl, and for the 2nd stitch with the yarn at the front of your work, insert the right needle into the next stitch from the back to the front and slip the stitch and the yarn off of the left needle (that is, slip the second stitch purl wise). Repeat this until the end of the row.

2nd row: With the yarn at the front of your work, insert the right needle into the stitch of the last row from the back to the front, slip the stitch and yarn off of the left needle. Next is a purl stitch picking up both loops. Repeat until the end of the row.
  2. Continue as above to a height of {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}. Bind off 3 stitches for the armhole and knit 26 stitches for the front in pattern described in row 1 to 2. Bind off 3 stitches and finish the back (28 stitches).
  3. Continue with the front (26 stitches wide) until reaching a total height of {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}. Bind off the middle 8 stitches in the front.
  4. Shape Neck Front at the neck edge, every other row bind off 2 stitches, then 1 stitch, and all remaining stitches for the shoulder.
  5. Finish the other side in the same fashion.
  6. Continue with the back until a total height of {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}. Bind off the middle 10 stitches.
  7. Shape Neck Back at neck edge, every other row bind off 2 stitches, then 1 stitch, then all remaining stitches for the shoulder.
  8. Sleeves: Cast on 24 stitches in the round. Knit the first row one regular stitch followed by one purl stitch, and repeat. At the beginning of the next row, increase by one stitch and follow the pattern described above. Repeat increasing by one stitch every third row so you have one row in between the increase. Repeat increase 5 times (until 29 stitches). Bind off loosely when you reach a total height of two or two and a half inches.
  9. Finishing: Sew shoulder seams and set in sleeves.
  10. Neckband: Pick up 39 stitches knitting in the round following the pattern as described.

Tips

  • If you have some leftover yarn, knit a scarf in the same pattern, casting on 10 stitches.
  • Knitted Measurements: Length {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, width {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}, length of sleeves {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}}.

Warnings

  • Use a thimble when sewing while also being careful of hurting yourself.

Things You'll Need

  • Some leftover (approx.1 ounce) of sport yarn or sock yarn in a color that suits your bear.
  • A set of double-pointed needles for knitting in the round. The range of needle sizes is 3-3.5 mm (US 3-4).
