Contents
Ingredients
- 2 lbs. (900 g) lean ground beef
- 1 c. (15 g) onions, chopped
- 2 small eggs, whisked
- 1/2 c. (30 g) seasoned bread crumbs
- 1 tsp. (5 ml) fresh ground pepper
- 1 tsp. (5 ml) garlic salt or powder
- 4 tbsp. (60 ml) butter
- 1 10.5 oz. (294 ml) can cream of mushroom soup
- 1 10.5 oz. (294 ml) can condensed French onion soup
- 1/4 c. (59 ml) red wine
- 1 1/2 tbsp. (22.5 ml) Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp. (15 ml) brown gravy seasoning sauce
Steps
Prepare the Steaks
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line a large casserole dish with aluminum foil.
- Mix together in a large bowl the hamburger, onions, eggs, bread crumbs and dry seasonings.
- Take a handful of the ground beef mixture and shape it into an oval patty, about 1” (2.54 cm) thick. This recipe should yield 6 large oval “steaks.”
- Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
- Brown the Salisbury steaks. Don’t brown for more than 5 minutes on each side or you will overcook them.
- Lift the patties out of the skillet with a slotted spoon. This will allow the grease to drain from the meat.
- Transfer the patties to the foil lined pan.
Prepare the Gravy
- Combine the soups, wine, Worcester sauce and brown gravy seasoning in a medium saucepan.
- Heat the ingredients on medium-low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Pour the gravy over the Salisbury steaks.
- Bake the steaks for 30 minutes.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
- Finished.
Tips
- You can make extra gravy by adding a few bouillon cubes and a cup of water to the gravy mix.
- Some people prefer to fry the steaks, drain them and then add the gravy. Baking them instead of frying helps them retain their shape better.
- It is sometimes easier to form the oval patties if you have refrigerated the ground beef mixture for a half hour.
Warnings
- If you are watching your weight, eat your Salisbury steak without the gravy.
- If you are trying to cut down on carbohydrates, consider having it with a salad and a green vegetable instead of potatoes and corn.
