Salisbury steak is named after the physician who invented it; a tasty hamburger “steak” that is low in carbohydrates. Salisbury steak is usually served with mashed potatoes and whole kernel corn.

Serves 4 to 6.
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. (900 g) lean ground beef
  • 1 c. (15 g) onions, chopped
  • 2 small eggs, whisked
  • 1/2 c. (30 g) seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) fresh ground pepper
  • 1 tsp. (5 ml) garlic salt or powder
  • 4 tbsp. (60 ml) butter
  • 1 10.5 oz. (294 ml) can cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 10.5 oz. (294 ml) can condensed French onion soup
  • 1/4 c. (59 ml) red wine
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. (22.5 ml) Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp. (15 ml) brown gravy seasoning sauce

Steps

Prepare the Steaks

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (176°C) and line a large casserole dish with aluminum foil.
  2. Mix together in a large bowl the hamburger, onions, eggs, bread crumbs and dry seasonings.
  3. Take a handful of the ground beef mixture and shape it into an oval patty, about 1” (2.54 cm) thick. This recipe should yield 6 large oval “steaks.”
  4. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  5. Brown the Salisbury steaks. Don’t brown for more than 5 minutes on each side or you will overcook them.
  6. Lift the patties out of the skillet with a slotted spoon. This will allow the grease to drain from the meat.
  7. Transfer the patties to the foil lined pan.

Prepare the Gravy

  1. Combine the soups, wine, Worcester sauce and brown gravy seasoning in a medium saucepan.
  2. Heat the ingredients on medium-low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour the gravy over the Salisbury steaks.
  4. Bake the steaks for 30 minutes.
  5. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
  6. Finished.

Tips

  • You can make extra gravy by adding a few bouillon cubes and a cup of water to the gravy mix.
  • Some people prefer to fry the steaks, drain them and then add the gravy. Baking them instead of frying helps them retain their shape better.
  • It is sometimes easier to form the oval patties if you have refrigerated the ground beef mixture for a half hour.

Warnings

  • If you are watching your weight, eat your Salisbury steak without the gravy.
  • If you are trying to cut down on carbohydrates, consider having it with a salad and a green vegetable instead of potatoes and corn.
