The SIM card is a tiny, rectangular card found in many mobile phones that acts as an ID card for your handset. It is usually located behind the battery. SIM cards are also used in portable electronic devices, such as iPads. Over time, you'll probably find yourself accumulating unwanted SIM cards by reason of changing providers, outdated SIMs, free promotions, and so forth. Rather than throwing them away, by following these instructions, you can turn a pair of unwanted SIM cards into high-tech earrings.

Steps

  1. Pierce a hole through the top center of the SIM card. Use a thumbtack, a pin, or a small nail.
  2. Widen the hole if necessary. Make sure the hole is wide enough to get the jump ring through by wiggling the pin around in it. You might also widen it with the tip of a pen or other tapered point.
  3. Open the jump ring using pliers. It's best to twist the jump ring sideways as this will not only open it more easily, but also make it close more securely.
  4. Slip the SIM card on to the jump ring.
  5. Slip an earring hook on to the jump ring and close tightly. The earrings are now ready for wearing or giving as a gift.

Tips

  • SIM cards are quite easy to get hold of. If you do not have any lying around, look for free SIM card promotions from phone companies.
  • Mix it up and use different colored SIM cards.

Warnings

  • The SIM card you use may not function anymore! It depends on exposure to humidity, static electricity, heat, bending and such, so it's mostly a matter of luck.
  • As always, be careful using sharp edges and tools. Children should be supervised during this activity.
