Make a Soda Bottle Candy Dish

One way to help save the environment is by creating new things out of those old, empty plastic soda bottles. Instead of tossing them into the trash, create candy or nut dishes out of them. They are great to use near the pool as well, as they are not breakable. Dip into your recycling bin and transform that empty soda bottle into a handy candy dish.

Steps

1. Start with a clean, dry bottle. Using a non-permanent marker, mark the areas of the bottle you’d like to use. It helps to cut extra and trim the bottle down. This is an image of a used bottom 2.5” of a 20 ounce bottle.
2. Poke a hole with a tack in the bottle outside the area you’d like to keep.
3. Push scissors through the hole you just made and into the bottle. Cut around your bottle, separating the top from the bottom where you marked your guideline.
4. Punch holes around the top or your container about .5" (13mm) apart.
5. Weave two 16" (40cm) pieces of ribbon in and out of the holes. End with a bow.

Tips

• If your bowl has a 'waist' to it, you can decorate it with plastic/waterproof ribbon tied around the 'waist' only on the outside. Then you can serve wet desserts/puddings/ice-creams in the bowl.
• They are unbreakable, and perfect to fill with candy or nuts or fruits for children's parties. Decorate them and use them and help save the environment at the same time.
• Another way to cut a thin bottle is to pinch it on the line you want to cut, so that the sides are touching and then just cut through the fold.
• These are great to use on the patio, to serve desserts or snacks in.
• You can also use an empty single-serving Make a fruit cup to make into this type of dish.

Warnings

• Take care when cutting the soda bottle; the edges can be sharp. When finished, check the edges and sand them if necessary.
• If you have threaded ribbon through the bowl, use it only for dry candies etc - do not serve wet desserts/ ice-creams in ribbon-decorated bowls.
