Activate an iPhone 5 with AT&T

If you bought your iPhone online or did not get it activated in the store, you'll need to activate it yourself. This article shows you a few different ways to activate your AT&T iPhone.

Steps

Activate a New iPhone Through iTunes

  1. Charge your iPhone. If your iPhone will not turn on, it probably needs to be charged. Plug it into your computer for until it will turn on.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions. Plug you phone into your computer when you are prompted to connected it to iTunes via a Mac or PC.
  3. Follow the iTunes instructions. You will be guided through the activation process, which should only take a couple of minutes.

Activate a New iPhone Online

  1. Go to the AT&T wireless website. Choose the best option from those listed. Then, enter your wireless number, verification method, and verification number. Then, click next and follow the onscreen instructions.
  2. Go to Settings → General → About on your iPhone. Find the IMEI number listed. Make sure it matches the one shown to you on the webpage.
  3. Activate your phone. Wait for 5 minutes or so, then restart your iPhone. It should be activated.
    • If you have trouble, call AT&T at 1.800.331.0500. They should be able to help you with any issues.

Activate a Phone by Transferring your Number From Another Provider

  1. Have all your materials ready. You'll be asked to provide the number you wish to activate, the account holder's social security number or tax ID number, and the account holder's billing or shipping ZIP code.
  2. Call 866.895.1099. This is the AT&T activations number. Follow the instructions given, and be ready to accept your Wireless Customer Agreement.

Activate an Upgraded iPhone from a New Number

  1. Call 800.331.0500 from any phone. Alternatively, if you have an AT&T wireless phone, you can just dial 611.
  2. Enter the wireless number that originally received the upgrade. Enter your old wireless number when prompted.
  3. Choose option #2. This will activate your device on a different mobile number.
  4. Wait to be redirected to an AT&T representative. They will give you specific instructions depending on your situation to allow you to transfer the number.
