If you're tired of using multiple remotes every time you want to watch TV, you can program your DirecTV remote to control your TV's power, volume, channel, and mute functions. Depending on your TV model, this may only take a few moments. If you have an older TV, or you have difficulty tracking down its specific code, it may take a little longer.

Steps

Identifying Your Remote

  • If your remote is long and rectangular with an orange SELECT button, Program-a-Direct-TV-Remote-Control.

Programming the DirecTV Remote Automatically

High Definition Receiver/DVR

  1. Turn on the TV. Make sure that the correct input for your DirecTV box is selected. Use your old remote or the buttons on the TV if necessary.

  2. Press MENU on the remote. It is located in the center of the remote beneath the navigation buttons. A menu will appear on your TV.
  3. Select "Settings & Help".
  4. Select "Settings" from the menu that appears.
  5. Choose "Remote Control". This will open a variety of options for your remote control.
  6. Select the "Program Remote" option. The screen will display instructions. Follow these directions to automatically program your device, such as a television or DVD player, to work with your DirecTV remote control.

Standard Definition Receiver/DVR

Programming a DirecTV Genie Remote Automatically

  4. Select "Settings & Help".
  5. Select "Settings" from the menu that appears.
  6. Choose "Remote Control". This will open a variety of options for your remote control.

Programming the Remote Manually

  1. Turn on the TV. Make sure that the correct input for your DirecTV box is selected. Use your old remote or the buttons on the TV if necessary.
  2. Find your TV codes. Each TV has a code that will need to be entered in order for the remote to connect to it. These codes can usually be found in your TV's manual, or can be looked up on DirecTV's website.[2] There may be multiple codes, which you will need to try until one works.
  3. Set the remote control selection switch to the TV setting. The switch is located at the top of the remote.
  4. Press and hold both the MUTE and SELECT buttons. The green light at the top of the remote will flash twice. Release the buttons after the light flashes.
  5. Enter your first code. Use the number buttons on the remote control to try the first code for your brand of television. When you have entered the code, the green light will flash 2 times.
  6. Press the VOLUME UP button while the remote is pointed at the TV. If the code is the right one, you will see the volume indicator appear on your TV.
    • If the code didn't work, go back to Step 4 of this section and repeat the steps with the next code.

  7. Press and hold MUTE and SELECT again. The green light will flash twice again. Enter 9-6-0 using the number pad on the remote. The green lights will flash again.
  8. Flip the selection switch to DirecTV. Your remote is now connected to your TV, allowing you to control the volume, power, and more.[3]

Scanning for a DirecTV Remote Code

  1. Turn on the TV. Make sure that the correct input for your DirecTV box is selected. Use your old remote or the buttons on the TV if necessary.
  2. Set the remote control selection switch to the TV setting. The switch is located at the top of the remote.
  3. Press and hold both the MUTE and SELECT buttons. The green light at the top of the remote will flash twice. Release the buttons after the light flashes.
  4. Enter the TV scan code. Use the number pad on the remote to enter the code 9-9-1. The green light will flash 2 times.
  5. Press the CHAN/PG UP button while the remote is pointed at the TV. Every time CHAN/PG UP is pressed and released the remote advances to the next code. Continue to slowly press and release the button until the TV turns off.
  6. Press and then release the button marked SELECT. Press this as soon as your find the code that turns the TV off. It will lock it into the remote and you will now be able to control the TV.

Tips

  • During scanning, the green light on the DirecTV remote control may flash 3 times. This indicates that all available DirecTV remote codes have been tried. Your television may not work with the remote control.
