Tangling and knots are a common occurrence with long hair. Long hair can easily become tangled if it is not cared for properly, not tied up on windy days, if it's curly, if it becomes wet or if it's humid outside. The following are some suggestions that you can follow to prevent long hair from tangling.

Steps

  1. Trim regularly.
    • Long hair requires regular trimming just as short hair does. As hair grows longer, the ends can dry out and split. These split ends disrupt the dermis coat of the hair, which is the outer layer of the hair that keeps it feeling silky and smooth. When the ends of the hair are split, the hair can become tangled much more easily. Regular trimmings, however, will keep these split ends from forming, thus reducing the chance of tangling.
  2. Use a moisturizing conditioner.
    • is an ingredient found in some shampoos and conditioners that has been proven to not only increase the shine of your hair, but also to improve its manageability and reduce static. Using a moisturizing conditioner with this ingredient after every shampoo; it will keep your hair soft, supple and strong. Moisturizing conditioners are designed to be detangling; your hair will comb out more easily afterward and will retain some moisture, making it less likely to tangle when dry.
  3. Wash every other day.
    • Daily washing of hair will remove sebum from the hair follicle. Sebum is a naturally produced waxy substance that keeps the hair healthy and protects not only the hair follicle, but also the hair shaft. By washing your hair every other day, you're giving the sebum a chance to keep long hair healthy and moisturized; this will result in fewer tangles.
  4. Spray on a leave-in conditioner.
    • There are many detangling sprays on the market that are meant to be used on hair after it has been washed and conditioned. Applied while still wet, this detangling spray will coat the hair with a very thin layer of lubricant, allowing hair to comb out easily. When dry, the hair retains some of this lubrication, which prevents tangles.

Warnings

  • Regular use of hair dye can dry out hair and dry hair is more prone to tangles. Use hair dyes infrequently if you have long hair.
