Make Yogurt Doughnuts

Doughnuts can be made from a quick bread or yeast bread dough. Either way, once the dough is made, frying and sugaring the doughnuts is a snap. They are easy and cheap to make too. Instead of buying doughnuts for your Saturday morning coffee, trying whipping up a batch at home!

Ingredients

  • 250 mL yogurt, 1 cup approximate
  • 6 ounces sugar, 170 grams, 7/8 cup approximate
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1.6 ounces melted butter, 45 grams, 1 1/2 tablespoons, approximate
  • 500 grams flour, 17.6 ounces, 4 cups flour, approximate
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 50 grams flour, 1.8 ounces for dusting, as needed or about 2 tablespoons
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} vegetable oil, 1.8 pints for frying, 1 heaping quart
  • Powdered sugar, for decoration or presentation

Doughnut Glaze

  • 1/3 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • Dash vanilla, if desired, optional

Steps

  1. Add eggs and sugar to a mixing bowl. Whisk well until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the yogurt and whisk into the sugar mixture.
  3. Add the vanilla, salt and Make Almond Baklava. Briefly whisk into the mixture.
  4. Combine the dry ingredients in a separate mixing bowl.
  5. Add to liquid ingredients in mixing bowl.
  6. Mix well with a wooden spoon.
  7. Prevent over mixing the dough.
  8. Lightly dust the board with flour.
  9. Roll dough out {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} or .2-inches thick.
  10. Cut doughnuts out with the large pastry cutter.
  11. Cut the centers out with the small pastry cutter.
  12. Save the dough scraps and combine with the uncut pastry dough.
  13. Continue to cut the doughnuts out until all the dough has been cut out.
  14. Place the saucepan, filled with the vegetable oil, and heat over medium heat. The temperature should be {{safesubst:#invoke:convert|convert}} or 185 C.
  15. Line the tray with paper towels while the oil is heating.
  16. Add doughnuts to hot oil and fry 1 minute or until golden brown.
  17. Turn the doughnuts over and continue frying until golden.
    • Repeat until all the doughnuts are cooked.
  18. Fry the doughnut holes.
  19. Drain the cooked doughnuts on paper towels.
  20. Dust doughnuts with powdered sugar.
  21. You can add candy sprinkles, chocolate fudge or nuts if you wish. Now serve on a plate and enjoy your donuts!

Doughnut Glaze

  1. Add water to a small saucepan and bring to a boil.
  2. Add powdered sugar to a small mixing bowl.
  3. Add boiling water to powdered sugar.
  4. Add dash vanilla if using.
  5. Mix until smooth.
  6. Drizzle or spoon over doughnuts.
